USC Notes: A Position Of Concern

Linebacker is obviously a question spot for USC this season and it appears defensive coordinator D’Anton Lynn agrees.

“There’s no one that has started an entire year,” Lynn said. “You have (Eric Gentry), who has been a starter. Outside of that, no one’s started a game. But there’s a lot of talent.”

A lot of responsibility falls on Gentry but he has a history of injuries. Desman Stephens is the other likely starter. There’s also Penn State-transfer Ta’Mere Robinson.

The offensive line, linebacker and cornerback are concern areas in my opinion.

      1. This year, we’re gonna see exactly how much value Riley brings. Jayden can be really good IF Riley is as fantastic with QB’s as everybody used to day he was.

      2. KAM: But can our depleted OL protect Jayden long enough for him to get a pass off?

DON: How can our OL development be so bad in the 4th year of Riley Coyote’s reign as head coach? It should be getting better.

  1. A few days ago Riley call the running back room the most talented position group followed by linebacker. Note that D’Anton Lynn says their inexperienced but talented. Rob Ryan says the same thing. I would rate talent over experience every time.

Ed G’s post makes it more difficult to talk about position groups. I’m afraid to mention tight ends and wide receivers.

    1. KAM: A few days ago Riley call the running back room the most talented position group ? They lost Darwin Barlow, Woody Marks and Quinten Joyner!

DON: Maybe Riley Coyote meant is compared to the lack of talent on the rest of the team. Others would say RB is the weakest area of the team , putting all hopes on a JUCO transfer, a New Mexico transfer, a seldom used Sophomore and a Freshman recruit.

  2. DON: Many Trojans are worried about the secondary, linebacker and offensive line, while others are concerned about the defensive line and quarterback. That should just about cover it

      1. Washington and Michigan come to mind. According to Anthon Sports:

A pivotal moment unfolded late in the fourth quarter for the Trojans. With just over five minutes remaining and holding the lead, USC had an opportunity to drain the clock. However, Lincoln Riley opted for two pass plays, both of which fell incomplete, handing the run-dominant Michigan offense another chance to stage a comeback.

“The drive with four and half minutes left … run the ball, take some time off the clock,” Leinart said.

    1. I’ve seen high school coaches who go into cruise control when they’re ahead with only a couple of minutes on the clock —they don’t necessarily get beat but they always get stung. Competitive sports, as Pete used to say, comes down to one concept: Attack, attack, attack.

      1. KAM: Great teams don’t relinquish the ball late in a game. Their running game wears down the defense of the gassed opponent.

DON: I am sure that residents of Pacific Palisades who lost their homes to fire would love to see the mayor get that worked up about the fact that no permits are being issued to begin the snail-pace rebuilding process.

Both Karen Bass and Gavin Newsom are monumentally incompetent politicians. Since they have no real successes to point at, they rail against my herculean attempts to save California from them. In the process, I will also probably save them from themselves. They don’t deserve it, of course, but I do my job for all Americans, even Traitorous Democrats.
