USC Morning Buzz: Talk About Two Tough Weeks

Purdue is playing USC and Notre Dame in back-to-back weeks.

Imagine the howling Lincoln Riley would do in that situation. If he were Barry Odom, he would have tried to cancel the USC game.

  • The USC-Michigan State on Sept. 20 at the Coliseum will kick off at 8 p.m. PT and be on FOX. What a kick off time! People will be lucky if the game ends before 11:30 p.m.
  • UCLA backup quarterback Pierce Clarkson was arrested Friday on a felony charge of assault with a deadly weapon with great bodily injury and has been suspended indefinitely from the team pending the outcome of legal proceedings.
  • USC offered a tribute to George Raveling at Saturday’s game with Georgia Southern.

  1. The SC-ucla intra-city football rivalry is unique to American football and will continue. No way ucla is dropping football, they’re too deep in a financial hole and it will take years of Big-10 payouts to crawl out of it

    1. KAM: If USC is willing to consider dropping the ND rivalry or moving it to September than nothing is sacred.

DON: We don’t need crummy UCLA now that we used them to get into the Big Ten. If they wise up like UCSB did and drop football, replace them with Rutgers or NW, no one will tell the difference. UCLA football hasn’t mattered since 1998.

  2. Fame is fleeting. George Raveling was on top of the world in the early 1990s with the great Harold Miner, but that was over 30-years ago!

    1. DON: Hardly on top of the world. USC finished third in the Pac 10 in 1991 and second in the Pac 10 behind UCLA in 1992 with Harold and finished 5th and 7th the next two seasons without Harold.

      DON: The Exaggerator strikes again.

      1. You’re right about him having only moderate success. But he was a good man! That seems to be getting more & more rare.

That Phillies fan who gave that whackjob of a woman that ball is one of them. I wouldn’t have done it. A baseball hit into the stands is a free for all. You aren’t entitled to it because it lands in your area.

    2. Yes, but we are STILL remembering what a mark George made. Only a tiny fraction of our current population will still be remembered 30 years from now by anyone other than family.

      George certainly left something behind.

      1. KAM: It’s becoming more and more apparent USC Mens Basketball is cursed and George did as well as anyone including Bob Boyd since the curse began 70 years ago when the Trojans under Forrest Twogood lost to Bradley 74-72 in the NCAA Final Four semifinal game.

DON: Yes lets give George his due. It’s been 70 years of unbelievable heartbreak. No one can over come that Curse.https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mLbuGuWgHTA

  3. I’m glad AP voters haven’t rewarded Riley for beating two creampuffs. A smart man would look at that and have zero desire to get out of the ND game.

  4. I guess the new college football power brokers, namely, the TV clan, don’t think much of the SC-Michigan St game, and so in its infinite wisdom has the match starting at 11:00 in New York

    1. Or, it could be the Trojans putting on another scoring fest that the New Yawkers will miss.

I watched Helton’s postgame press conference. He indicated that USC seems “much better on offense, particularly at QB, WR, and RB.” And that “LR seems like a totally different person this year, more like the coach he was.”

Interesting that Helton didn’t mention anything about USC’s defense…

      1. Helton was on his way to 28 points when he decided to run out the clock with 27 seconds to go [who woulda thought it would be Helton showing “scoring mercy” in this game?] …so I guess he thought it would sound insincere if he praised our defense….

    2. Helton and Riley have two things in common, they suck as football coaches and know nothing about defense, recruiting the lines or special teams

  5. UCLA should be a good football team. They have strong academics, a great location, and a great recruiting base in Southern California. If they hired a good coach, say Kalen DeBoar who will be available soon, they could turn it around. The problem is the school and alumni seem disinterested in football and they are not going to be able to compete for the best in the NIL era.

    1. I sense that football has become an afterthought in westwood…so few of the students care about it enough to go to the games, and the alums have given up, after so many dismal years of mediocrity at best. It was never a good sign that they had an 80-yard practice field for so long…they need either Wasserman or Aikman or someone at that level to donate, but those guys already have given a ton of $$$.

Deshaun Foster is earning $3 million, which is less than Mullen is earning at UNLV.

      1. Before the USC game ESPN asked Foster what he worried most about in preparing for the Trojans—- Foster haughtily replied: “Nothing about the Trojans worries me! Nothing!”

Apparently nothing about ANY team on his schedule worries him…. and he’s getting exactly the results he [but not his team] deserves….

      2. it was Wasserman and aikman that insisted and forked up the $$ to get that useless lazy chip Kelly here when jed Fisch was right there for the taking

  6. After the Carrot and early Kiff years of SC beating ucla 12 times in 13 years, since 2012 SC has a 7-6 record against ucla. It still is pretty competitive
