If It’s Friday, It’s Time For A USC Notes Column

Former USC wide receiver Michael Jackson (2021-23) is now playing at Purdue. He has a team-high seven receptions for 79 yards for the Boilermakers.

  • I’m going to mention something great and not-so-great about the USC football game day experience.

Great: No more gates at campus entrances, which allows free flowing access from campus to the Coliseum and vice versa. It’s much easier to back-and-forth at the Exposition Blvd. entrance despite the large crowds. Thank you interim president Beong-Soo Kim.

Not-so great: USC actually sends people around campus to see if reserve tailgate spots are being used. If you are not present when university personnel visit your site, it’s a $50 fine.

  • And now for some history:
  • The only time USC has played at Purdue was in 1976.

The game was tied, 7-7, before USC pulled away in the second half for a 31-13 victory. Mosi Tatupu scored two TD’s and Ricky Bell added another one. Vince Evans threw a TD pass to Randy Simmrin.

  • Of course, the biggest game between USC and Purdue was the 1967 Rose Bowl. That’s Bob Griese at QB and No. 55 is USC linebacker Jim Snow. All-American linebacker Adrian Young is in the middle.

The game had a dramatic finish as USC QB Troy Winslow threw a 19-yard TD pass to WR Rod Sherman with less than two minutes left to cut Purdue’s lead to 14-13. USC coach John McKay elected to go for two points

There was no overtime in those days.

“A tie would have been a moral victory (for the underdog Trojans),” a reporter told McKay.

“The Trojans do not play for moral victories,” McKay said.

Winslow threw a pass to halfback Jim Lawrence, who was in the end zone but it was intercepted by Purdue co-captain George Catavolos.

“We missed by one foot,” Lawrence said. “The ball was right there — I could feel it — and then this guy came up from behind at full speed and took it away.”

USC PICTURE OF THE DAY

  • USC tailback Bob Levingston gains eight yards against Baylor in 1959. Levingston is another graduate of Los Angeles High School.
  • Here is the 1958 USC football banquet:

Lou Byrd (left) and Hillard Hill (right) are in the front row while Monte Clark (left) and Larry Gilhooly (right) in the back row. Clark accepted an award on behalf of Ken Antle, who was in the hospital.

A DIFFERENT WORLD

  • Look at this window display for Southern California Edison on Third Street in downtown Los Angeles on the eve of the 1930 USC-UCLA game.

  1. Great Friday column; where else can you read about Mosi Tatupu (haven’t heard that great Trojan name in a long time) and Petula Clark in the same column.

Not to jump the gun, but…

    Trojans 38

    Boilermakers 20

You go to great lengths to appear to be an intellectual when instead you consistently make some of the dumbest comments on this site. On the previous post, you stupidly tried to equally attribute the left’s words and actions to the political right. People like you are the problem when you refuse to acknowledge reality and instead act as some pseudo-intellectual who is above the fray.

Equal is from the Latin “Aequalis” meaning same as, level, even. It does not mean disproportionate or approximate as you are suggesting. In fact, it means the exact opposite. Of course, being a pseudo-intellectual, you will now obfuscate and deflect claiming that you misspoke or I have misinterpreted your nonsense.

And if you are questioning the assassin’s political leanings, then why did you even write “Libs or Repubs” in your original comment since you are apparently now asserting that politics may not even be a motivation? Of course, you know the person’s political leanings but it doesn’t fit with your desired belief that Republicans and conservatives are to blame for divisiveness and political violence. Or are you so daft to think that someone who agreed with Charlie Kirk would want to kill him?

You previously dismissed and excused the unhinged individual on this site who advocated for a political assassination. You are a weak person with average intelligence. You are not an intellectual and you possess no moral superiority despite your continuous efforts to appear to do so.

DON: But the Democrats and their Fake News stooges are still trying.

An X account with five million followers promoted a fake photo of Robinson in a Trump shirt. Others are sharing fake donor information, claiming Robinson was a Trump donor. They ignore the family and friends who report that Robinson went off the deep end in high school and became a staunch leftist. Their is no “Love” from the Democrats. They have made their goal clear. They are no longer our countrymen.

  16. KAM: When I said that both Dems and Repubs are equally to blame for assassinations, brother, what a hellstorm that started

DON: The MAGAs are keeping score and so in recent years the score is 7-2, 7 attempts or successes by the Dems and only 2 for my guys

    1. KAM: You seem oblivious to the record since Obama told his Democrats to “get in people’s faces ‘ up to Democrat Senator Chris Murphy declaring hours before Charlie Kirk’s a s s a s s i n a t i o n, “We’re at war…you have to be willing to do whatever is necessary.” And the Fake News Democrat toadies cheerlead for Democrat violence, vandalism and threats and even minimized and mocked the a s s i n a t i o n attempts of President Trump. They were disappointed he turned his head at the last second. After all, he IS Hitler.

DON: The contrast is clear. Except to full mooners like you.

  17. KAM: And did you notice, Don, how none of your MAGAs responded to my question of “Couldn’t there be other factors at play other than simply political-orientation for killing a politician, like getting your name in the paper and going down in history

    DON: You’re right

  18. DON: Anyway, back to the game, I would imagine there is not much interest in this SC-Purdue thing outside of SC and Purdue

KAM: But 8 in a row in recent years Georgia over Tennessee is the game of the day. The Volunteers could very well outduel the Bulldogs today

  19. KAM: This is a 3 time-zone change for our SC boys. I know I wouldn’t have adjusted to the time difference after only 2-days

DON: Sometimes on my jet I fly from tomorrow to today
