USC Morning Buzz: Disarray Across Town

The amount of disarray within the UCLA program was stunning, according to an insider I spoke to yesterday.

Interim coach Tim Skipper, who is in charge after the firing of DeShaun Foster, is expected to take over the defense, because the view is that there was a complete lack of leadership coming from the head coach and the coordinators.

“There wasn’t any discipline or leadership,” a source said. “It had a circus-like feel to it.”

It’s pretty telling that in the past two seasons the offensive coordinators were Eric Bieniemy, who turned out to be a disaster, and Tino Sunseri, who came from a successful Indiana program but (crucially) had not called plays for the Hoosiers.

Foster’s inexperience gave the program almost no culture to speak of, which resulted in the implosion to start this season. The idea that a position coach, who never hadn’t even been a coordinator before getting promoted, was incomprehensible, especially as the team moved into the Big Ten.

“Everything fell apart but this falls on the athletic director,” the source said.

Ironically, the one area Foster did rebuild was recruiting, which withered under Chip Kelly.

Skipper will have a herculean task to turn things around the rest of the season and it’s going to be vital for UCLA to hire someone with strong leadership skills and experience, the source said.

  • Michigan State coach Jonathan Smith, who faces USC this week, has a buyout of only $3 million.
  • There’s been some mention of Jedd the Fisch at Washington, but he’s believed to strongly desire the Florida job.

  1. You hire an offensive coordinator who did not call plays. Who does that? “Here’s our chief surgeon. At his last job he didn’t perform surgeries but he assisted others who performed them.”

    1. KAM: Another DEI hire by the DEI hire AD Jarmond predictably fails.

DON: Such a mystery that UCLA is in disarray. It must be due to racism by whites.

  2. Today’s column comes as a shock to me. Foster was amazing at press conferences and on the sidelines….. if you’re into watching walking amnesia.

      1. His one liners are off the charts with the innuendos…the “curcis with cotin candee” and “petting the fisches” (Jedd Fisch, or as Scott likes to say, “Jedd the Fisch”.

  3. Some good news at USC – the Purdue QB was hurried on 31 of his 39 pass attempts, one NFL guy said that is unheard of, and said that if the DBs could get their act together then USC could be a playoff contender.

  4. Scooter,

I know of a young man that plays lber for ugly and who starts. I texted him and I told him that he better not quit on the school, the team, or himself, else I will go to him and in no certain terms chew him out. He gave me his word that he won’t quit. I know he won’t. Feel very bad for him. He is one of the nicest and polite young men that you would ever want to meet. He is my only favorite ruin. I have known him since he was 2 years old.
