Unsurprisingly, USC defensive coordinator D’Anton Lynn said Wednesday he had not been contacted by UCLA.
It’s too early for coaches to be contacted.
“We’ve got a lot of stuff on defense that we’ve got to clean up and improve on,” Lynn said. “So that’s where all my focus is.”
Lynn is right. His defense ranks 14th in total defense in the Big Ten (319 yards) and 17th (next-to-last) in pass defense at 233 yards per game.
And that’s against the mighty gauntlet of Missouri State, Georgia Southern and Purdue. Imagine what the stats would be against a real schedule?
But you wouldn’t know those were the team rankings the way some USC fans talk about Lynn and the defense.
- Former Fresno State defensive coordinator Kevin Coyle is a candidate to join the UCLA coaching staff, which is short a coach following the departure of Ikaika Malloe.
But that won’t help the offense. Offensive coordinator Tino Sunseri was an odd hire from Indiana, where he did not call plays. I’m told he also has a drill-sergeant persona.

Lynn needs to be working overtime with the defensive backs.
Michigan State gave up 40 points to Boston College and 24 points to Western Michigan. USC should put up 35 points or more against a weak defense, but I wouldn’t bet on it.

Riley didn’t seem to be concerned with the defense. Said they played well and actually praised Marcelles Williams. I don’t get it. The pass rush was working and the Purdue quarterback only had 2 seconds to throw. Why not play the receivers tight and let DL get to the quarterback. We were giving them a 10 yard cushion.

I think he cares about the defense. He replaced the defensive coaching staff and a big chunk of the NIL money went to defensive players. I think he may have the philosophy that if the defensive creates turnovers it has done its job and we created three against Purdue including a pick six. That was the philosophy behind the Grinch defense.

For USC to succeed Lynn can’t keep failing….. we’re on the verge of another Grinch era —- one in which we’ll only beat good teams by scoring every time we get the ball…. and even Caleb couldn’t pull that off: he’d score with one minute left in the 4th quarter and the opposing team would march downfield and pull the game outta the fire with no time left….

Scott Wolf, USC has faced 202 plays on defense. Only Michigan at 203 and Maryland at 219 have faced more plays. Context should be provided as opposed to gratuitous whining. Give the players a chance. They are slowly improving, believe it or not. Look at the Irish defense to see how bad things can get.
