USC Morning Buzz: What’s Up With Defensive Coaching?

Between national media clamoring for him to be a serious candidate for the UCLA job and USC fans glazing him as a defensive coordinator, D’Anton Lynn‘s stock has never been higher.

So naturally I wonder why? That’s not necessarily a criticism. But the mere question comes across as negativity compared to the gushing media/fans.

I wonder how those people seriously believe USC’s defense is performing at a level capable of getting to the College Football Playoff? It hasn’t so far.

Let’s look at two plays from the Michigan State game:

  • This play is your typical “busted coverage” but does that mean exactly?

It looks like Lynn has the secondary playing “vision ball,” which means the defensive back first stares at the quarterback. The problem with this play is Kamari Ramsey keeps his eyes on the quarterback and never keeps track of the receiver.

It also looks like the receiver’s route fooled USC’s defense. But Ramsey still needed to pay attention to the receiver, who is totally uncovered. Ramsey takes his eyes off the receiver too soon. Is he being taught properly?

  • Now let’s look at another play. Watch the tailback.

Now USC linebacker Eric Gentry takes a step toward the tailback but quickly turns his attention to the quarterback, Aidan Chiles.

If Chiles turns and flips the pass to the tailback, he waltzes into the end zone uncovered, a second embarrassing play of the night.

Does USC seem well-coached on these plays? What about on the eight plays when the defense committed penalties? Is it concerning these plays involved two defensive stars? Just asking questions because no one else wants to apparently.

  1. To Wolf’s point, the SC defense was dealing with a dual threat quarterback, so a Trojan had to act as a “spy” on those plays, and I am sure Ramsey is a talented enough player to eye the quarterback and receiver

    1. …throw in the fact Ramsey [and everyone else playing in the back four] are constantly trying to make up for personnel losses due to injuries…

I hate my opponents, and I don’t want the best for them, I’m sorry.” His remarks came after Kirk’s widow, Erika Kirk, said she forgave her husband’s suspected killer.

Trump takes great pride in using divisive comments to fuel his agenda. People all the world dislike him, which he wears as a badge of honor

  4. Mr. Wolf, one of the bad habits that last years team had was lack of communication. This year’s team has that issue as well. Why? Inexperienced leadership. Your attempt at coaching is laudable but lacks context. It’s called mirror and plaster. The lack of Football knowledge on this sight is unfortunate. Go read Bob Oates or Paul Zimmerman to get up to speed.

KAM: Agree. Bu what did Mr. Kirk say about such speech?– “The most disgusting speech should absolutely be protected”

DON: And he must have heard more than his share of “disgusting speech” being directed at him from the lion’s den of colege campuses to make his Christian conservative case

  7. More patience is needed Scott. It has only been a little over a year and you can see that the D players are better coached than a couple of years ago. They are not super heroes, so it will take some time for the D to be dominate.

Remember that Ramsey is playing out of position and the Secondary is injured. Regarding Gentry, he is very instinctive and he made the correct decision on that play. The D staff being legit does not mean they will fix everything in one year.

  8. One notable area of improvement of the USC defense under D’Anton is pass interceptions by defensive linemen returned for touchdowns. I believe USC leads the nation in that category. Credit where credit’s due, Wolfman.

  9. D line is so much better this year, Gentry is one of the top LBs in the country.

Can we just figure out how to cover receivers? All the D-line and Gentry need is about 3 seconds before the opposing QB is sacked or it becomes a broken play. .

  10. This is what you get when you face coach Jonathan Smith. He gave USC fits when at Oregon State. He gets into the head of the defensive coach’s approach and figures out how to beat it. If the DB’s are queuing on the QB’s eyes, then he gets his QB to do head and eye faints that confuse the DB’s. He’a master at it. It’s an anticipatory approach. It’s inside tennis, only football. Better learn how to overcome this or nothing but trouble down the road.

  11. USC extended 4 drives with dumb penalties…despite that, MSU total offense was 330 yards. If the secondary can do an adequate job, and the penalties are cleaned up, then the season has real potential.

    1. Agree 67. Jahkeem Stewart looks great for a Freshman. Was very disruptive. And Floyd Bouchard, another Freshman, is getting some pressure and so is Kameron Crawford aka Fountain. In two years this defense is going to be in the top five.

      1. Stewart and Bouchard aren’t eligible for the NFL draft until after their junior years. And Stewart’s NIL deal is so sweet he won’t be leaving until then and may even stay for his senior year.

    1. Don’t like Kimmel but I am ok with it. Disney/ABC pays him 16 million a year and his rating are down 50% from January, 2025. He is costing Disney about 50 million a year in losses. A question arises as to why they are so willing to bankroll a show that is an economic loser for them. This was the perfect opportunity for Disney to dump him in favor of a show that people may actually watch. The Disney/Kimmel propaganda is only effective if people watch the show.
