Sunday Buzz: Someone Played Physical Football But It Wasn’t USC

This is what Lincoln Riley said after USC lost to Illinois:

“We’ve got to bounce back in the bye week. We’re not a very healthy team right now.”

USC’s not healthy? Are you telling me that mighty schedule of Missouri State, Georgia Southern, Purdue, Michigan State and Illinois has decimated the Trojans?

What about the new strength coach? The new, big defensive linemen? The “big dudes” that Urban Meyer talked about below?

But it’s the easy part of the schedule that apparently has USC reeling.

The Fox announcers spent Saturday telling us the Illinois offensive line was not great. Well, they looked great pushing USC around Saturday.

Look at the game-winning drive for Illinois. The Illini ran the ball on six plays for 39 yards. They completed one pass for 0 yards. That’s what USC would have done in 1979.

And this was the last drive of the game. Illinois just said we are shoving it down your throats. Stop us. And USC blinked.

According to the official stats, 360-pound lineman Jamaal Jarrett didn’t even play. Georgia coach Kirby Smart probably thinks “fooled ’em again” with USC.

By the way, Bear Alexander had five tackles for Oregon last night vs. Penn State. Dan Lanning seems to be getting something out of him.

  1. Illinois was a solid team last year…. and a solid team this year. They played Indiana with three fourths of their secondary out. The game was an anomaly —they’ll finish with a respectable record.

USC is riddled with injuries —that’s true. Whether that’s a matter of conditioning or bad luck—or some combination of both — is anybody’s guess [but…since we end up riddled with injuries every year it must have something to do with USC’s strength & conditioning program].

If we get healthy and beat Michigan [which I think we will], all will be right again. Notre Dame is beatable.

    1. KAM: It’s called depth.

DON: We are like the old WSU teams in the Pac 12 in the 1990s and early 2000s that were brutal up in Pullman in September but decimated by November…

  2. Someone get LR the Illinois at Indiana game film. It is obvious what Indiana schemed for in their game was Bielema’s penchant to run the ball. Indiana planned entirely to take the run away from Illinois, where the Illini gained 2 net yards rushing in that whole game, and the rest is history. So what did LR game plan for? The answer to Illinois was right in front of him from their game the week before! Instead, we get no defensive game plan at all from LR, much less to stop the run, and given that Illinois has a very experienced O line, the result is as obvious as it is depressing. And make no mistake that we probably do have better talent than almost every team we face, but if we don’t coach, don’t plan, and don’t scheme for opponents effectively, we lose games. Period.

    1. Great comment. [Without excusing the phucked up prep or game coaching, it would have been a different game with Ramsey at nose tackle — the defense wasn’t playing the game they thought they’d be playing prior to 6 a.m.]…..

      1. Ask yourself if a healthy USC could play with Ohio St, Penn St, Oregon Alabama, Georgia, Mississippi etc. I don’t think they could hang with New Mexico or Boise St

SC has a dullard for a head coach, he doesn’t learn from his mistakes, he still has no idea that defense wins championships and if the recruits don’t bail, you’ll get another year of his fantastic leadership and clock management skills

      9. Urban Liar?! Hell no!

Didn’t want him in 2022 and don’t want him in 2025.

I want a coach who is doing well in a program that is not a traditional powerhouse, while FOLLOWING THE RULES. We’ve had more than our fair share of grief from the NCAA.

If they are doing well at a non-powerhouse, they’d probably do very well at USC!

  3. Coach Riley just released the following statement: “The pressure associated with being at the bottom of the Top 25 has been lifted — we’re back to getting only a dozen votes outta the A. P.—this frees us up to do great things absent the intense visibility that comes with being a bottom feeder in the Top 25….the monkey is off our back…. we no longer have to deal with the scrutiny Miller Moss receives at Louisville.”

  4. What this the culture at SC right now? What is the program about?

McKay had a clear culture. Pete had a clear culture.

What is Lincoln’s? Almost ready to turn the corner?

Nothing has really changed from last year.

He can run up the score on poor teams because he can hit the long bombs. He can’t do that against good teams. QB’s don’t have time due to OL.

Defense rarely gets the clutch stop. We got D’Anton Grinch.

SC always let’s teams hang around and get back in the game.
