USC Morning Buzz: Are We In The Middle Of A Rerun?

How is this playing with Jen Cohen? She was already fed up enough with Lincoln Riley to bring in Chad Bowden.

Now she has to watch USC lose in exactly the same way as it did before.

Who imagined before the season USC would have the 103rd-ranked pass defense in the nation going into the Michigan game?

Remember how Riley vowed to get more involved in the defense after Alex Grinch struggled in 2021?

Do you ever see Riley talking to D’Anton Lynn on the sideline during a game? It doesn’t really matter because Grinch got fired after Riley “expanded” his role.

USC couldn’t even put much pressure on the QB against Illinois. That’s another issue to worry about besides the secondary.

This is all like a rerun despite months of promises of a new team.

  • I think it’s great Eric Musselman thinks outside the box on creating buzz but can we also maybe focus on why high-priced transfer Rodney Rice injured his shoulder and will be out a month following the supposedly season-ending knee injury to star freshman Alijah Arenas before the season even starts?

  1. The internet is alive this morning with stories of several members of the defense suffering from food poisoning on Saturday morning. If these stories have some basis in truth (1) USC has an obligation to look into what happened and (2) to make damn sure it cannot happen again. Is Riley really so disassociated from the team that he lacks the time to ensure their safety at away games?

      1. By ” great football ” do you mean

        5 penalties instead of 15 ?

        Perfect clock management ?

DB’s actually covering their man ?

Not gagging in crunch time ?

I’m going to guess that the players who got sick ate food from either, room service or take out because I’d bet the team meal had pretty much the same food and everyone would have been ill.

      2. I have an open mind on this one —let’s see who is right on October 11th.

[btw, the story making the rounds is the catering service that provided a chicken dinner on Friday is responsible for the illness….and several payers said they didn’t partake cuz it smelled bad]….

      3. I would take a bet on penalties at no more than 5.

And I am hopeful on not gagging in the 4th. I don’t see things much differently than BK, but after so many clusterf years over the last decade, hope is all I can do. The buyout on Riley is prohibitive so I suspect he is here through at least next year.

      4. If USC loses to Michigan, then they go to ND and Nebraska, I think both are losses. Then they would be 4-4 with Northwestern, @Oregon, Iowa and ucla left. Win three, go 7-5, win two, 6-6 not exactly what 11 million a year should be producing and that would follow 8-5 and 7-6 seasons. Think about that for a minute, Riley’s last three years could be 22 – 16 or 21-17, not exactly worth 11 million, or even 5 million.

Think 2026 will be better ? How about at PSU, at Indiana and Ohio St, Oregon and ND at home

  2. Until Riley is gone USC will be 6-6, 7-5, he just isn’t head coach material.

Jason Eck is the coach to go after, but he looks like a guy who just came out of a dive bar so no way the BOT hires him, plus he doesn’t get USC.

      1. May I say that one’s life may not be complete until you have come out of one dive bar (healthy that is…). Many interesting conversations to be had in places like that.

      2. I’m not putting dive bar’s down, but he just doesn’t look like what the BOT wants to have as a head football coach, you know, a guy who looks like a head football coach and not a model for skinny jeans

      1. Riley is about as thin as they come.

He had enough talent on his OK teams that he could go 10-2, occasionally beat a top 10 team, but the deficiencies of not have a great defense or a superb o-line would often be exposed.

BTW, separate topic – some people think of Chip Kelly as such an offensive mastermind…in Las Vegas, their rookie star RB from Boise, Jeanty wanted to use the same stance in the backfield as he had at Boise. Chip refused. So Jeanty underperforms his first three games. Last night, Chip relents, tells Jeanty he can use his old stance, and the Jeanty goes for 140 yards and 3 TD.

      2. Great point, 67. It just goes to show football is a little like acting —directors have to give actors room to do their thing.

[Actually, it’s almost always best to let talented people do their own thing. Angelo Dundee kept trying to get Ali to block punches with his gloves instead of leaning back. He finally realized Ali knew better than he did how to handle himself in a fight].

      3. Riley played in the BIG 12 aka the Basketball on Grass Conference as in no one played defense. He also inherited Stoops recruits and did well, until he played big boy teams and his defense, or lack thereof, got exposed. Once Stoops recruits graduated, Riley’s teams struggled, look at his last couple of years at OU and you’ll see tight games with average teams and loses to teams OU should have beaten

    1. For any regular Joe, that would have been fine, Fake Gabby. We can get a little chuckle out of it.

But it was incredibly childish of Trump to do it. Unlike Dementia Supporters, I will call a spade a spade, just as when he said after Kirk’s assassination that he doesn’t care about uniting the country.

But he still hasn’t come even close to making me think we’d have been better off with Kamala. The bad guys of the world would have ignored her the way they ignored feeble Dementia Joe.

Not a good look for Jeffries either.
