USC Morning Buzz: Some Questions Go Unanswered

USC defensive coordinator D’Anton Lynn was feeling ill Wednesday night and did not meet with the media after practice.

If he is sick, no problem. But . . . was he well enough to coach practice? To instruct his players? If so, he should have been able to answer some questions, as much as he might not want to following a loss.

If he wants to be a head coach, he will be expected to meet with the media. Win or lose.

What this means is by next week, things will have cooled down and we won’t get many answers about why USC’s defensive line got pushed around at Illinois or why it has one of the worst pass defenses in the nation.

    1. It’s not inconceivable the illness problems developed in Illinois will last a while longer. Being a suspicious Sicilian I’m always concerned when Homeland Security says “this mass murder wasn’t a case of terrorism” one hour after the event & without any investigation—and I feel the exact fricking same way about the food poisoning incident before the Illinois game. [I’m pretty confident McKay would have said “I’ll comment on this after we’ve had a chance to look into it”….not, “shucks, it happens’]…..

      1. McKay would have made a joke about hiring a new catering service the next time they came to play Illinois.

And McKay wouldn’t have used the food poisoning as an excuse.

      2. McKay criticized the crap officiating in the 1968 Notre Dame game –“I don’t know how these guys look themselves in the mirror.”

[Extra Special Note: Since USC won’t look into the incident we’ll never know for sure what happened —but I think it would be okay to list food poisoning as a reason for a loss….as a rule of thumb, most players play better when they’re not poisoned]….

  1. Coaches feel they’re on the hot seat? Coaches don’t want to talk to reporters? Things will get so unbelievably hot if they lose to Michigan I’m not sure they’ll ever be inclined to appear on camera again —-which is why I think Riley will actually put his ‘motivator-in chief’ pants on this week and next. I remember having a conversation with a certain City Attorney where I said “if we do ‘x’ it’s going to hurt our case.” He didn’t seem to care. So I said “if we do ‘x’ it’s going to hurt our office.” Still didn’t care. When I said “if we do ‘x’ it’s going to hurt you personally” all of a sudden it looked like he was listening. Welcome to the world ‘of personal hurt’, Lincoln.

    1. I had to laugh, you used motivator and Riley in the same sentence, that was hilarious.

BTW, how many DA’s did Ed Nash have in his pocket ? I know he had a coke head judge, a Fed and a few cops on his payroll.

      1. It’s Riley’s funeral if he doesn’t have the team jacked up for Michigan. He said on Monday, “it’s not about pep talks, it’s about practicing.” No, Lincoln —whether you like it or not, on October 11th it’s going be about both.

  2. After 20 years of coaching, Riley still doesn’t know how to strategize time on the clock, although he is an apparent excellent play calling tactician. In fairness, Riley developed some original double pitch run plays.

In Illni game he seizes an opportunity to score TD by a pass taking the lead late in game, but leaves too much time on the clock, allowing opponent enough time to score FG and win. In chess, you must sacrifice pawns, knights, etc. to put yourself in a position to check mate the opponent.  Riley’s playing checkers, opponent’s chess.  This isn’t isolated problem but continuing one.

Riley has almost identical win percentage as Clay Helton over first four years (R=67%; H=65%).  I would be satisfied with 6-6 record if SC beat formidable foes like Michigan, Notre Dame, Oregon, let alone Illinois.  But, so far, no go. We all write our own record.

And the food staff needs to add pre-checking likelihood of food poisoning when on the road with all the money tied up in NIL’s, salaries, etc. Now Coach Lyn has come down with an apparent stomach sickness. What? He’s lacking discipline? There may be ways for nutritionists to provide supplements that minimize or eliminate such events (activate charcoal, fast rehydration).

The Big Den refereeing on the road will call tacky tacky penalties of lineman downfield to get the home team back into the game. There was no one around The General, so he didn’t draw coverage from the opponent’s DB.

It wasn’t lack of discipline against Illini, it was lack of fire.

    1. Riley doesn’t entirely know the meaning of the phrase “catch fire!” [btw, at least Wayne is on fire]….

      1. KAM: MG If Lynn really has the flu or a stomach virus or covid, why would it be a good idea for him to have any contact with the team until he is well, especially in a bye week?

DON: Lynn sure didn’t develop food poisoning 5 days after the game. He used that as an excuse to duck the media.

      1. Our favorite poster will have already started vomiting, by that time. And I would feel oh so bad, if that were to happen.

  3. Enough with all the Riley negativity.

Every team has a fanbase that goes psycho after a loss.

Hell, the Dodgers Dave Roberts was on the hot seat last year and they won World Series.

Yes, Riley is overpaid and he only coaches offense.

He is our coach for better or worse.

    1. KAM: For worse. Riley Coyote lost to an Illinois team that gained 2 yards rushing and lost to Indiana by 53 points the week before.

KAM: It would be different if we lost to a good team like Ole Miss. But Riley Coyote ducks hard teams in the 4th year of his coaching the Trojans. We aren’t seeing improvement.

  4. What do I know? Not much. I’m no sports physician, but I have had to be medical caregiver for six people. What I learned is when people are sick they don’t make good decisions, but you have to let them make them and not takeover. And sick people are lethargic. Sound familiar?

    1. Very familiar. For roughly 4 hours I watched people make bad decisions and look lethargic on Saturday, September 27th……

  5. Not necessarily fair to post that video since it was aired before the Illinois game. Nobody is saying that right now about USC defense.

Of course Lynn should not shy away from the media and should be accountable.
