Morning Buzz: Is USC Getting Kicked Out Of Coliseum For Entire 2028 Season?

Is USC going to play the 2028 season at another stadium because the Coliseum will be unavailable due to the complications of removing the elevated track that will be installed for the 2028 Olympics?

That is the belief of author Rich Perelman of The Sports Examiner, who detailed why he believes USC will be forced to play at SoFi Stadium or the Rose Bowl in this article.

Perelman is a track buff and long-time public-address announcer for UCLA track and field.

If you don’t believe his theory, this statement from USC spokesperson Cody Worsham didn’t exactly deny USC would play elsewhere.

“USC and LA28 are working in lockstep on all logistics for the Olympic and Paralympic Games. We will share details with the public when they are finalized,” the statement said to Perelman.

  • I would be worried if I was a season-ticket holder, student or perhaps one of the many organizations that use the USC campus for pre-game festivities. Try and replicate that on an asphalt lot at SoFi. And don’t ask how much parking will cost there.

Perelman bases his assumption on the fact that a similar track was installed at Hampden Park in Glasgow, Scotland, for the 2014 Commonwealth Games. The games ended on July 27, 2014 and the first soccer game was held on Jan. 3, 2015.

  • Here’s a sobering thought: The Paralympics Games closing ceremony will be at the Coliseum on August 27, 2028. USC hosts Fresno State on Sept. 9. No way that game is at the Coliseum.

I might be in the minority but I’m not sure I see the value of kicking USC out of the Coliseum for an entire season so the Olympics can use it for two weeks (plus two weeks for the Paralympics). And I like the Olympics!

But hey, USC planned to play Notre Dame in Mexico City for the Netflix Bowl in 2026 so why not play the Irish in Inglewood in 2028? Fight on!

P.S. — There is one silver lining: Imagining the reaction of Lincoln Riley if he loses the “Coli” for an entire season.

  1. DON: I had not seen a nighttime picture of the coliseum with its north side fans forced to look at corporate America residing on the south side. Looks like they tore out 10,000 fans’ seats to make way for the coporate guys.

    USC: hey olympics, rent has gone up in L.A. and we draw around 450,000 fans per year. Also, concessions, and tv money are way up. In order for you to play at the Coli, write a check for $280,000,000. That will tie us over.
