Is James Franklin’s Firing A Trend Or One-Off?

USC is an 8.5-point underdog to Notre Dame according to BetOnline.

  • So Penn State fired James Franklin this morning. His buyout is roughly $49 million. There was some thought his buyout would prevent termination this year.

Would USC be able to swallow Lincoln Riley’s massive buyout? The problem is USC still is $50 million short on its new athletic facilities project; the university had a $200 million deficit last fiscal year and layoffs are still on-going.

But I guess Franklin’s firing proves never say never. It’s the second-largest buyout behind Jimbo Fisher, which was more than $76 million.

The person who signed Franklin to that long-term deal was former Penn State athletic director Sandy Barbour, who helped run things at USC after the firing of Mike Bohn.

  • USC tailback Waymond Jordan will undergo ankle surgery tomorrow and is expected to miss 4-6 weeks according to Matt Zenitz and Chris Hummer of CBS Sports.

      3. KAM: It’s a sad day for Cowardly Gabby. There is a lot of rejoicing in America, Israel, and among normal people around the world about the peace deal in Gaza, but the Palestinian terrorist-huggers like Cowardly Gabby, Tranny Bruin, Owns and trojsteve9 are heartbroken.

DON: And, of course, they should be. This isn’t really a peace deal. This is an utter capitulation, a total surrender by the losers of Hamas who have completely and utterly failed. They started a war and got their asses kicked, yet again. Their fight from the sewers, where they hid behind women and children, was not an example of brave resistance as they steadfastly endured victimhood. Every single misery that the Palestinians have suffered over the last two years was utterly deserved – in fact, they deserved much, much worse.

    1. Any ortho surgeons reading this? Apparently he suffered the equivalent of a very bad high ankle sprain and needs to have the ligaments tightened.

  1. KAM:: Penn St has a $700-million stadium renovation debt it is servicing, so perhaps its thinking was ‘What’s another $50 million to be rid of Franklin

DON: Are you listening Coach Wiley?

      1. Well the Federal Reserve Board had a 2 billion cost overrun to renovate its building. And that building doesn’t generate any ticket sales revenue.

    1. Tough time to be a coach…Belichick doing poorly at UNC, after they fired Mack Brown, who didn’t deliver. Sark turned the heat off a bit by beating OU, though OU’s QB was coming off thumb surgery and threw 3 picks. DeBoer ok at ‘bama, but lost 4 last year and played in a third tier bowl.

Besides OSU, perhaps the hot prospects are the HCs at Indiana, A and M, maybe Tennessee. And then there is Kiffin. OMG, who ever would think that…

      1. I want a coach who has done well at a school where it’s not so easy to recruit. A Matt Campbell or Kalani Sitake type.

I’d put Kenny Dillingham on that list, too. But I don’t see him leaving ASU.

      2. Despite their record, the guy at New Mexico is going to get hired by a big name school, the guy can coach.

Cignetti at IU was the head coach at IUP, Elon and James Madison before he got the Hoosier gig, can you even imagine USC hiring a guy with that HC background ?

      3. So Cal, recruiting to BYU isn’t hard, it’s rather easy. Matt Campbell wouldn’t last a minute in LA.

      1. Yes on 50 because a 2/3 permanent Dem majority in the state legislature and 43 out of 52 Congressional representative isn’t enough. Although we only have a 5 point edge over Republicans among registered voters in California and yet hold a supermajority of the legislative power, we Dems need more representation. 95% is better than 85% in Congress. We will again gerrymander what has already been gerrymandered in our favor and we are willing to bypass the law to do it. Vote Democratic. The Republicans are Fascists and a threat to Democracy. If they get back into power, they may require you to show a photo ID to vote. Because of our leadership, that is now illegal.

      2. I guess it’s safe to say Sybil is for it cuz (1) he/she doesn’t live in California and won’t be hurt by the insanity Prop 50 produces, (2) he/she is 100% free of any knowledge of Constitutional Law and (3) [As Alfred told Bruce Wayne] “Some people just wanna see the world burn”]….

  2. KAM: Happy Columbus Day, Sane People of America!

Mainstream Moderate Democrats s got their grubby commie paws on Columbus Day as part of their ‘fundamental transformation’ of America project. They can ruin anything they touch and they’ve had American history in their sights for a long time. Once that all kicked off, I was suddenly a huge fan of Columbus Day.
