USC Morning Buzz: The Newest Excuse For Losing

One new alibi from the Lincoln Riley apologists is that it is tough to win road games, especially when Riley is 0-6 against ranked teams on the road since he was at USC.

Well, Texas A&M won at Notre Dame. How about that?

Alabama won at Georgia. Indiana won at Oregon. Ohio State won at Illinois (memo to USC). And Oregon won at Penn State, which at the time was a huge win.

Yes, winning on the road is difficult. But good coaches and teams do it.

  • Here is what Petros Papadakis has to say about the way USC has handled the rivalry.

“It makes me so sick that something so deeply ingrained in our identity as a former player or fan … that Lincoln Riley or Jen Cohen, just a fart in the wind in the history of USC, can even say something about the rivalry,” he said.

    1. So if you can Riley in 2027 the 2026 recruits won’t portal ? This is the fallacy of ” saving the recruiting class ” they’ll leave down the road if Riley gets canned anyway

  1. DON: Petros is a convincing talker, but the fact is Wiley is going nowhere. SC has a $200 million football facility it is still paying off, the school would owe him $70-mil or so for his buyout and have to pay $100-mil to a new coach. And if Wiles is fired now, you can say goodbye to your 2026 recruiting class

KAM: It took the ex-Michigan coach 9 years to win a National championship and the same for the Clemson guy

    1. Right Sparrow: You would need a billionaire donor to agree to pay Riley’s 70 million buyout. And also buyout the assistant coaches. Very unlikely. But it did happen with Jimbo Fisher at Texas A&M. Even under these circumstances I think it makes more sense to wait until after the 2027 season given all of the quality lineman recruits who are coming into the program.

  2. Scooter,

The problem is SC just has Helton 2.0 and Grinch 2.0. Can’t say anything about the special teams because Riley doesnt’ have a special teams coach. he gets an F. BTW, who is coaching the field goal kicker? if it is himself, then he does not need a coach

  3. One worrisome item, Michael, is how Wiley rode the successful shirttails of Heisman type quarterbacks, and now that he has pedestrian guys in Miller Moss and Maiava, he’s not doing so well

    1. Gee Professor Pseudo Intellectual, why do you think that is ? You think talent might factor into the equation ?

It’s cute how the you, the fake John Wolcott, talks sweetly to the fake Michael Guarino. Maybe you’re the same kook.

    1. Maiava is an interesting kind of talent. He has an impressive skill set…. and he cares about doing one thing with it…. following Lincoln’s orders. Commentators [including coaches] have commented on the fact he doesn’t seem to want to make the offense HIS — he only wants to implement the boss’ game plan. Coaches I respect have mentioned Maiava might be even more effective if he was playing in an offense he was more invested in.

[I do love how little Maiava respects the beat reporters during post practice interviews —he gives them nothing but “Personally, I just want to get better…. I expect the real playmakers to get it done for us…my job is to just get the ball in their hands.” That’s his answer NO MATTER what the question is].

      1. Maiava doesn’t have what it takes, he’s not football smart in any way shape or form. Yeah, he’s got some nice stats but Pavia at Vanderbilt is miles better than Maiava, Pavia is a gamer, a winner, Maiava is a stats maker but he’s not a winner. You watch Pavia and think what is he going to do to make a play for his team in crunch time, you look at Maiava and think what is he going to do to phuck his team in crunch time.

      2. Larry Smith didn’t have what it takes. Jen Cohen doesn’t have what it takes. Maiava doesn’t have what it takes. Riley doesn’t have what it takes [actually, you’re probably right on that one]…

      3. Maiava is good enough but he needs to incorporate the quarterback run into the offense. He has the talent to do it. The offense is good enough. Its the defense, on all three levels.

  4. So now it’s ” Can’t fire Riley the fraud or we’ll lose the recruiting class. ” ? Or is it ” SC can’t afford to fire Riley. ” ? Or is it both excuses ??

SC can afford to can Riley, I’m sure there are enough deep pocket alums who would line up to pay that fraud off and send him back to Muleshoe, the problem is Jen has to actually talk to some of them to get their money.

And sometimes you have to bite the bullet to get a better coach, a great recruiting class isn’t going to make Riley and his staff of retards coach any better.

Nice to see the Midget Musselman get the two big men from NY, can’t recruit his own backyard but 4 star recruits are four star recruits no matter where they are from

    1. like I stated a few days ago. Don’t ever let a recruiting class hold you hostage in your mind. Ncaa football today, only should 65% of that class makes it to the first day of school and half of the rest don’t make it to year 2 and transfer. Especially at usc due to the over recruitment of qb’s and receivers. If your culture and structure get corrected due to new leadership then your recruiting and retention will be better in the long run.

      1. The foundation of a great team is the offensive line. It made the Raiders, the Rams, and the Trojans great in the seventies and early eighties. It takes time to develop them. You can’t get them through the portal. I am not willing to abandon a 2026 recruiting class that has six offensive line recruits that virtually every other big name program wanted. In a few years we can play like USC in the McKay and Robinson era – just run it down their throats. Kind of like what ND and Illinois did to us.

      2. this fan boy stuff about recruiting classes is getting tiresome. I gaurntee 2 of the 6 linemen wont be at usc in September. Honestly do you think LR will be playing power football in 2 years? He’s too addicted to receivers and that’s how you loose the flashy ones. Signetti lost a quality Indiana class and brought zero star kids from James Madison because they had heart and technical proficiency. And he won right away. Culture, structure, ethic and principals are correct there and as a coach, I can see it and know how it works and where it comes from. Being in successful programs and identifying commonalities that dictate success. LR has only seen life under Leach (not that successful) and stoops successful, but then took that program at an apex and let it slide with stellar recruiting classes. Do the math people. Saving classes is like rearranging the deck chairs on the titanic as its going down.

  5. Was that celebration by the basketball team because of the recruitment of the 7-foot twins?– If so, that seems strange to cheer for recruitment news.
