If It’s Friday, It’s Time For A USC Notes Column

LSU has an interim president, provost, athletic director, medical school chancellor, chief administrative officer and football head coach. Other than that, the university is in great shape.

  • Former USC basketball player, Ronnie Coleman, who at one time was the all-time leading scorer in Trojan history and is still No. 2, is a high school referee in Southern California.
  • Carson Palmer has been announced as a 2025 inductee to the Orange Bowl Hall of Fame.
  • Did you know Washington State and Oregon State will play each other twice this season? The Cougars and Beavers play Saturday in Corvallis and the rematch is Nov. 29th in Pullman, Wash.
  • Nebraska fans in Omaha on Thursday night were ready for the USC game.
  • And now for some history:

WHAT WOULD LINCOLN RILEY DO WITH THIS SCHEDULE?

  • When people talk about USC’s schedule this season, compare it to 1969, when the Trojans went undefeated against five-ranked teams. USC tied No. 5 Notre Dame in South Bend, defeated No. 9 Michigan in the Rose Bowl, defeated No. 11 Nebraska in Lincoln, beat No. 13 UCLA and beat No. 19 Stanford.

A USC-NEBRASKA MOMENT

  • USC hosted No. 9-ranked Nebraska at the Coliseum in 1970. The Cornhuskers led 21-14 before USC tied the game with about seven minutes left. Neither team scored the rest of the game.

Nebraska All-American linebacker Jerry Murtaugh described a post-game scene.

“Now at the end of the game, one of the trainers comes up there and said, ‘There’s two guys from Southern Cal outside who want to talk to you.’ I’m thinking, ‘Oh (no), I got to go out and fight,’ ” Murtaugh said. “I got ready and I went out and there’s their two captains, Greg Slough and Clarence Davis. Slough was a great linebacker All-American, Clarence Davis was the running back, also an All-American. They said ‘We wanted to shake your hand. We had no right being in that game with you guys.’ ”

  • USC defensive end Charlie Weaver sacks Nebraska QB Jerry Tagge in the 1969 game. No. 83 is Jimmy Gunn. The No. 5-ranked Trojans won, 31-21.
  • USC fullback Charlie Evans requires several Nebraska defenders to bring him down.

  6. So SC’s record versus Nebraska is 5-0-1 with Nebraska never having won a game. Of course the Trojans didn’t play Nebraska during the Huskers hey-day in the 1990s

      2. Nebraska does not have much of a defense. Got pushed around by Minnesota. We should be able to run the ball against them but I would feel better if we still had Waymond Jordan.

        I thought Gabby said a few days back that he was going to the USC marching band pep rally today at the Palms at 2:00 and wanted to “meet up” with Scott. Instead, he spent the day trolling the blog. Once again a threat followed by a no show. That’s our Cowardly Gabby. All talk, no walk.

  13. So now that I am finally on the right side of the betting spread argument, if the casinos did not like how 70% of the bets were going to SC, why would they reduce the point spread to encourage even more betting on SC?

    1. With USC favored by 6.5, too much money was going on NEBRASKA not USC. So they brought it down to 4.5, so that an even amount of money would come in for each side.
