Morning Buzz: USC-Nebraska Report Card

QUARTERBACK

Jayden Maiava had his first stinker of 2025. He completed an atrocious 9 of 23 passes. How many future opponents will try to emulate Nebraska’s zone defense? It used to frustrate Graham Harrell’s Air Raid at USC.

Grade: F

RUNNING BACK

All hail the King! Nebraska has a terrible run defense but you can only play what’s in front of you. King Miller exploited the weak rushing defense and should have gotten more than 18 carries but you know Lincoln Riley.

Grade: A-

WIDE RECEIVER

Who thought a team could hold Makai Lemon to two catches for 18 yards? Or maybe that’s Lincoln Riley holding Lemon down by not getting him involved enough in the offense. Whatever the reasons, the group struggled all night.

Grade: D+

OFFENSIVE LINEMAN

Three false starts including two by Tobias Raymond. How many will USC have when they go to Oregon? On the plus side, Kaylon Miller entered the game after Alani Noa got hurt and did a nice job. Don’t forget Maiava got sacked three times and had two intentional groundings.

Grade: C

DEFENSIVE LINE

Anthony Lucas had seven tackles but let’s not lose track of the fact Nebraska rushed for 188 yards. That’s a lot when you consider the Huskers had no passing attack in the second half.

Grade: C+

LINEBACKERS

Was it a tour de force for the linebackers or did they simply make tackles because Nebraska ran 40 of 62 plays? I know what I think. It’s kind of crazy how few two-dimensional teams USC has faced this season. Oregon and UCLA could be wake-up calls.

Grade: B

DEFENSIVE BACKS

Let’s get it right: This game proved nothing about the secondary. Nebraska’s passing game was nothing special with Dylan Raiola, although he found some usual weak spots. I am mystified by some of Nebraska’s playcalling.

Grade: C

SPECIAL TEAMS

Ryon Sayeri kicked field goals and continued his excellent season. I’ll pretend not to notice the kick off that went out of bounds. USC has the fewest punts of any team in the country and it’s a good thing because the Trojans are bang average on punts.

Grade: B-

COACHING

Lincoln Riley started out with that strange formation on third down that didn’t work. He didn’t run the ball enough the fact King Miller averaged 7.2 yards per carry and the passing game never made any adjustments. But he squeaked out a victory against a hapless opponent, so he is happy.

Grade: D+

      Three days before the election, the poll reported Harris had opened a 3-point lead in the Hawkeye State, which Trump had carried twice before. The results suggested that, assuming the Iowa poll was accurate, then Harris’s chances of winning the presidency were enhanced.

  5. Let’s see F for the quarterback, D for the wide receivers and a D for the play calling pass happy coach. Did we score? How did we win? I would kick Maiava up to a D based on the runs he made in the second half. We did score two touchdowns in the half and a two point conversion.

    Riley was asked about the need to get Lemon more touches. He’s been neutralized two games in a row. Didn’t say much other than “when the defense schemes to stop one player there are more opportunities for others.” How about some crossing routes.

      And the defense that frustrates the air raid is 7 back, so why is that the WRs fault? When there are 7 back, you run, run, and run some more.

      I thought his grade for the OL would be an F, given that two false starts led to a FG instead of possible TD and a 4th down that was not converted.

      1. Agree 67. Sometimes you just need to take what the defense is giving you. We had three big runs in a row, got to the seven yard line and Riley then calls three straight pass plays. Why? Punch it in. Make a statement early in the game that our line is going to dominate your defense. Nobody is impressed by the coach’s need to be clever. We could have forced them to change defenses or rushed for 300 yards.

    Sybil IS right about some things, though. Trump is in trouble. He hasn’t alleviated the harm done to working class American families caused by Biden [they are still struggling mightily to make ends meet]. And his mass —rather than targeted deportation of felons and misdemeanants — efforts are not popular with American voters.

    Trump should be very worried about what happens to him in 2026. Without Charlie Kirk organizing voter turn out and personally heading Turning Point USA the repubs seem more lost than usual [and they were a hapless party to begin with].

    2. MG: What’s your source for saying that most votes do not support mass deportation as oppose to one that only targets gang members and felons. I thought that would be unpopular too but a few months back I saw a study that 70% wanted all the illegals deported. (I would like to see the Muslims such as Ilhan Omar deported given that they have no interest in assimilation and hate our country.) I don’t think that is a practical solution. Perhaps deport everyone who came during the last five years based on a lack of ties to the community and the treason perpetuated by the Democratic party in opening the borders to unvetted immigrants. And I would like to see the welfare freeloaders and EBT fraudsters deported. If they can not show they have been continuously employed and paying taxes on their wages for the last 5 years move them out. We don’t need anymore deadbeats. And anyone who voted while illegal would be ineligible. They also need to become fluent in English before they are offered a pathway to citizenship. And pay a fee equivalent to at least twice what the Coyotes were paid to bring them here.

But Newsom who administers Medi-Cal in California extended it to cover full medical care to illegals. That is what the controversy is about. And the shutdown is not about ACA subsidies. Those do not expire until December. Its about free medical care to illegals and it is on page 59 of the 1.5 trillion dollar Democrat increased spending proposal. Do you ever get it right?     2. Being great at athletics is their identity. For many of them, it is hard to adjust when their playing days are over. What’s my purpose now that I can no longer play? A lot of depression, substance abuse, ect. Very few have a successful new career and they typically retire in their late twenties to early thirties. Not surprising that most of them have trouble financially even if they did very well in their playing days.

        Medicaid is a Federal program administered by the state under the heading of Medi-Cal. All the health care costs by the state under the program are reimbursed by the Federal government.

        By the way, who gave Gavin Newsom the authority to give illegal immigrants free health care paid for by the state or federal taxpayer when the federal government denies these benefits to non citizens. Under what statute was he granted this authority. Do we need to have a “no kings” march in California. This Newsom guy acts like a dictator. I hear that he changes the voting laws on a regular basis, the ultimate sign of a dictator. He wants illegals to vote. It is a crime now to ask for an ID at the polls. And anyone who receives state benefits or a driver’s license is automatically registered to vote. Illegals receive both.
