Saturday Buzz: My Analysis Of What Happened At USC-Northwestern

Before I discuss the game, did you catch what Lincoln Riley said about the recent speculation over his future?

“You guys know what I sacrificed to be here,” he said. “I’m where I need to be.”

Sacrificed? He makes $11.5 million a year. What did he sacrifice?

Apparently, we are supposed to recognize all that he gave up at Oklahoma to come to USC. But Riley left the Sooners because he didn’t want to go to the SEC. That’s not a sacrifice. That’s Riley not wanting to compete, a trait that has continued at USC.

Are the homers so gullible to believe this rubbish from Riley? Don’t answer that.

  • Now to the game: USC won comfortably but it would have been a little more interesting if that defensive lineman didn’t fumble at the goal line. I still think USC would have won, obviously, but the suspense would have lasted slightly longer.

Jayden Maiava returned from his one-game bender and King Miller (131 yards) had another good game. Normal service was resumed.

I have to say I thought the offensive line was awful at times. Not all the time but more than it should have been.

On the other hand, I thought the defense was wanting. Again. They gave up two 75-yard touchown drives just like against Nebraska. And the defensive line was getting pushed off the line of scrimmage by Northwestern’s offensive line.

The saving grace was Northwestern’s vanilla offense. The Wildcats were just the latest USC opponent who have not discovered the forward pass. It’s a joke, to be honest in this day and age.

  • Let’s address the whole quarterback is wearing No. 80 issue. Whether it is right or wrong, here is my take: If you really think it’s such a great thing, why burn the play in a game you are heavily favored to win?

OK, you showed other teams you can do it. But wouldn’t you rather save it for Oregon or UCLA? I would.

Riley said after the game that Sam Huard has worn No. 80 for the past three weeks.

Like everything with Riley, however, that is not the full story. The game notes produced by USC with the official roster this week listed Huard as No. 7. So for three weeks he wore No. 80 but USC didn’t notice? Or intentionally did not tell anyone?

Is Northwestern supposed to know the No. 3 QB is wearing the same number as the punter if it’s not listed on the roster?

When Lane Kiffin did something similar with Cody Kessler against Colorado in 2012, he got criticized.

  1. Wolfe should seek employment with another team. He has absolutely zero understanding or knowledge about the game of football. He made similar commentary about Pete Carroll when he was here. Following the likes of Marriott and Bayless, his goal is to get a coach fired and claim victory over it. I’m not a Riley fan, so who are you going to get to replace him. Serious question!

Cowardly Gabby embarrasses himself with every post. But why does he do it. Here is an excerpt from a recent abstract on why narcissistic personalities engage in antisocial behavior. It could be one of two reasons or both.

“Narcissists seem to disregard social-etiquette norms. For example, narcissists are more likely to brag (Buss & Chiodo, 1991), behave aggressively toward others (Barry et al., 2006, Bushman and Baumeister, 1998, Stucke and Sporer, 2002, Twenge and Campbell, 2003), and use offensive language (DeWall et al., 2011, Holtzman et al., 2010). Although it is well-known that narcissists are prone to break social-etiquette norms, the underlying causes for this tendency remain largely unclear. One possibility is that narcissists break social-etiquette norms as a means of grabbing people’s attention (the “attention-seeking” hypothesis; Buss and Chiodo, 1991, DeWall et al., 2011). An additional possibility is that narcissists, for various reasons, simply perceive such norm violations as less offensive than non-narcissists (the “insensitivity” hypothesis; Collins & Stukas, 2008)

DON: She really is a sick individual. Who would waste 25 years of their life spamming a USC sports site? Are Bruins really that demented?

  7. I don’t think Riley left OK for the money. The compensation for Venebles and Kelly were comparable to the Riley package. OK would have paid him 100 million to stay. I think he looked at what Carrol accomplished and thought that he could do the same. USC has unique recruiting advantages that should attract top 5 classes every year and Riley recognized that it was easier to recruit at USC than Oklahoma. Unfortunately, he took Grinch with him and that has set the program back at least two years. I really think he has righted the ship on recruiting the last two years and we should be very good in 2027/28 and if we are not it is solely on the coaching staff and Riley must go.

  10. You are right on point Scott. Riley is a glorified offensive coordinator masquerading as a head coach. At Oklahoma he feasted on a weak Big 12. He can’t beat Notre Dame and Oregon will once again expose him for the fraud that he is. My fondest wish would be for him to go to the SEC but that will never happen because unlike Pete, he is afraid to compete. How pathetic that so called SC fans are ecstatic over beating a perennial bottom feeder like Northwestern.
