      2. I wonder what would happen if USC held on every run play ?— on one of the holds our defensive end was grabbed by the jersey and was trying to pull free [as the runner went by] for about 2 seconds right in front of the ref …..

  8. wow I just picked up something on the fake punt. Hurd was never announced by the head judge that he changed numbers. Even thought it was the same as the punters number, that was a major F-up by big 10 officials and you may see a reprimand come Monday. Now if usc did not inform the crew of the number change that would have been an illegals deception call and nullified the play and resulted in a 5 yard penalty. The broadcast Mike was open from the 3rd down play through the end of the 4rh down play and the crew never stopped the clocks to announce it. It’s mandatory when a player changes a number pro special teams. This was obviously to deceive since hurdes number was not alredy on the field and he actually switched jersys with the punter. If the crew did not get informed that may be a fine to from the big 10 office. It is similer to kiffen deflating footballs. But the crew still should have picked it up.

    3. Interesting since he is rostered at #7 and no one else on the roster is 80 other than the punter. If someone is coming off their roster number with another number, jersey or pullover it needs to be announce on his first play in the game. Technicallty, yes, but there is a reason for it. Much the same as someone not in the huddle standing on the sidelines but just inbounds blending in with the reserves. See Oklahoma this year with a TD called back. or leaving 12 men in the huddle so the Defense doesn’t know who’s in the play. Deception is supposed to be limited to the structure of the play, not by manipulating administrative or procedural protocols. It was missed by big 10 refs and im interested to see if its caught. This blog would probably miss it if reversed situation but would be whining about it once it was brought their attention. If the NW staff was notified pregame they would have been all over the fake punt since 80 for a qb and th same as the punters number is an obvious strategy move. We can see where scott has now picked it up too.

  9. That muff by Northwestern just before halftime was huge! What a difference going in at halftime up 21-14, rather than down 21-14.
