USC Morning Buzz: Less Than Ideal Homecoming

A Los Angeles judge ruled against the Rose Bowl Operating Co. and City of Pasadena in their attempt to obtain a temporary restraining order barring UCLA from further exploring leaving the Rose Bowl until pending litigation is resolved.

  • What awaits the Homecoming crowd at the Coliseum on Saturday? There is a 70 percent chance of rain.
  • The highest-ranked ACC team (Miami) in the College Football Playoff rankings is currently seventh in the ACC standings.
  • I vote for several college football awards but I have to admit I never heard of the Burlsworth Trophy, which goes to the most successful player who began his career as a walk-on. USC tailback King Miller is a semi-finalist.
  • Sam Huard is No. 7 on the roster of USC’s official press release this week. Of course, he was No. 7 in the press release last week too.
  • I don’t want to talk anymore about Puntergate but this was highlighted by NBC rules analyst Terry McAulay, who has silenced some obnoxious fans this week.

  1. Coaches are responsible for adhering to the “spirit of the rules.”

That is exactly the kind of language that gets struck down in court after court every day of the week as vague and overbroad.

  2. Lincoln Riley: Be ready to face the most punitive officiating in the history of officiating. If you think the Big Ten is gonna play nice on Saturday you’re in for a huge surprise.

  3. If I were a betting man [which, actually, I am], I’d say USC is in for interference calls every time they defend on a pass into the end zone….. and all we’ll hear from the Big Ten Network announcers is, “Oh, yes —they’ll call that one every time!”…..

I thought Gabby said a few days back that he was going to the USC marching band pep rally today at the Palms at 2:00 and wanted to “meet up” with Scott. Instead, he spent the day trolling the blog. Once again a threat followed by a no show. That’s our Cowardly Gabby. All talk, no walk.

DON: That’s how we know Cowardly Gabby is The Coward of the County. If she really lived in Las Vegas like she pretended to, she would be a total coward for not showing up to confront Scott that day after wasting 25 years stalking him on this site.

  4. ucla’s old coach Tommy Prothro had a trick play where he had a player apparently running off the field and he would then stop and go out for an uncontested long pass. A bush move, and Wiley’s is right up there too

  5. I wish college football would impose restrictions on jersey numbers based on position. It used to be that way and still is in the NFL. A punter should not have #80. That is a receiver number. And a quarterback needs to be 1 to 19. Had this rule been in place we would not have had jerseygate.

  6. Everyone reveres ND coach Marcus Freeman, yet he pulled the same thing last year with Buchner, including changing jersey number.

The “spirt of the rules” means that whoever made the rules was too lazy/skilled to do what is needed to make sure rules are followed and without ambiguity.

    1. “Spirit of the Rules” isn’t what any court would characterize as a “self-executing formula.” That’s the test…..

      1. 67 — The same company that hauled off the 9/11 rubble was commissioned to haul off the Lahaina rubble. Beyond that, nothing much is being done. Remember insurance companies only cover 12 months of rental assistance —the Lahaina survivors ran out of insurance a long time ago. They’re screwed. Just the way all homeowners are screwed after a natural disaster —since rebuilding takes years.

    2. Freeman doesn’t represent my alma mater. I find little consolation in him having done it before.

Riley was already a wuss for dodging Notre Dame and the jersey switch only confirmed it.

      2. What can Sybil do. Well he/she can try these exercises:

        Exercises and techniques

        • Mindfulness and self-reflection: Practices like meditation and focused breathing can help individuals observe and detach from their unhelpful thoughts and feelings without judgment.
        • Emotional regulation: Learning to identify and manage strong emotions is crucial. This can involve skills taught in DBT such as paced breathing and other relaxation techniques.
        • Perspective-taking: Therapists may use role-playing exercises to help individuals consider different viewpoints in a non-threatening way.
        • Empathy and gratitude: Engaging in activities that foster empathy, such as gratitude exercises and focusing on the needs of others, can help shift focus away from self-centeredness.
        • Interpersonal skills: Exercises can improve communication, conflict resolution, and the ability to express needs assertively and respectfully in relationships.
