Morning Buzz: USC Connection To College Football Playoff Controversy

Every story seems to have a USC connection.

Baylor athletic director Mack Rhoades has stepped from the College Football Playoff committee, where he is chair, and taken a leave of absence at Baylor.

According to Outkick, an initial investigation involved allegations Rhoades put his hands on a player before the Arizona State game, followed by a physical altercation with an assistant coach.

The player was former USC tight end Michael Trigg. Outkick reported Rhoades wanted to know why Trigg was wearing a yellow long-sleeve undershirt while Baylor wore all-black uniforms.

‘What the (expletive) are you wearing that yellow shirt for?’ Rhoades allegedly said.

He also reportedly physically accosted an assistant coach after the game and Outkick now says there are new charges “which do not involve Title IX, student welfare or NCAA rules. They also do not involve the football program.”

This is just an aside, but no shock a former USC player was wearing a T-shirt with a color that might not have been part of the official uniform. It’s not unusual at USC.

  • Thankfully, the USC bookstore was carrying Makai Lemon’s jersey yesterday and not just No. 80 jerseys for the punter/No. 3 QB.

You can also get Jayden Maiava’s jersey in white.

  1. BUT, is the bookstore offering 32 jerseys?

Not going to go well this Saturday. Riley will continue his record of 5-12 versus ranked teams. He’s 0-6 versus ranked teams on the road. That’ll be 0-7 after next Saturday.

    1. I’m more optimistic since the game is at home. The X -factor will be rain. But that could play to USC’s advantage since it could make Iowa totally one dimensional. Their QB rushes 10 or more times per game on RPOs, in which you can probably take the “P” out of the RPO. Maybe a spy would be effective.

      1. Cool reference from Mad Magazine!

[I think the predictions of bad weather are gonna actually help us — everybody’s on notice of how physical this game is gonna get. My ONE concern is Desman Stephens —I heard him interviewed — he seems WAY nice —not a run stopper mentality]….

  2. Players get around a lot these days…I remember when we lost Trigg, who looked like he might be the second coming of Charles Young. He was tall, big, fast, very athletic. I recall he transferred to somewhere in the SEC and now he is at Baylor…go figure.

Which also makes me recall Romello Height, who transferred to USC from Auburn as an edge. He was injured on the first series in the first game he played, was injured, lost for the year. He transferred after that, he might be on his 4th or 5th school now.

    1. Trigg went to Ole Miss with Jaxson Dart. I recall that it was considered a lost to USC. They did not want him to transfer.

I can’t imagine an athletic director attacking a big, young, athletic, tight end. Well, at least not Jen Cohen. Maybe Carol Folt after a few drinks.

  3. Scooter,

You brought up a good point. I remember back in the 70’s, the entire team wore shore white socks and black shoes with none of this shirts showing or panty hoses showing. Now adays, they wear one arm pullups or leg pullups and crappy shoes. That is from the head coach Riley. He is a pacified puss with no discpline. That is why he loses the big games. the team has no discipline

You need professional help, Cowardly Gabby. Maybe you can get in on the counselling with your fellow Sore Loserman Democrats: As reported by Punchbowl News, Jamie Raskin, the House Judiciary Committee Ranking Democrat Member, has enlisted psychologists to help Democrats on the panel cope with President Donald Trump’s presidency. If the recruitment of psychologists by a House Democrat leader doesn’t convince skeptics that TDS is real, I’m not sure what would.

The purpose of the session, according to multiple attendees, was to counsel Democrats about how to approach conflict and effectively combat what Raskin described as “authoritarian styles of speech.” Another attendee said Judiciary Democrats were also advised to avoid devolving into partisan mud-slinging — a more common hallmark of the House Oversight Committee, which Raskin previously led as the top Democrat.

During a retreat last week for Judiciary Democrats, Raskin — the ranking member of the key panel — hosted Jim Coan, a University of Virginia professor of psychology, and Hal Movius, a consultant who specializes in “negotiation,” “influence,” “emotion regulation,” “leadership” and “organizational development.” Coan’s “recent work emphasizes the neural systems supporting social forms of emotion regulation,” according to his bio with UVa. The retreat was held at the Library of Congress.

DON: Cowardly Gabby sure could use some intensive treatment by Dr. Doan.

  4. DON: College football with its relatively new pay-to-play philosopy has created a segment of carpetbaggers who go where the money is best.

KAM: Some kids go to 2 or 3 different schools in pursuit of the money

DON: Can’t blame them. Out of about 10,000 college players each year, maybe 2% will ever see any NFL money

KAM: But with the money being thrown around in football these days, some of these kids might be financially set for life while still in college

    1. A lot of the “big uglies” aren’t getting so much. QBs are nailing it. Michigan’s QB (maybe he will be great one day, he was mediocre versus USC) is getting $12.5 million, courtesy of Larry Ellison. Now, that could set a person for life.

$3 million per year, net of taxes = $1.7 million to invest per year.

$6.8 million invested after four years, split between Nasdaq 100 and other diversified funds = $900,000 average return each year, including dividend reinvestment.

There is a stock called Annly. It is a Real Estate Investment Trust (REIT). They must pay 90% of the earnings to the stock holders and they keep 10% for adm fees. Theyh rate of return quarterly is 10%. I bought some at $6 per share and it is up to $20 per share. Their investments are in propety in NY. Now with the commie mayor in town, who knows what will happen.

    2. KAM: The California Public Employees’ Retirement System (CalPERS) is reportedly considering a $2.4 billion investment in the Big Ten Conference, which would involve acquiring a 10% stake in a new entity called Big Ten Enterprises. This deal aims to provide significant financial support to the conference and its member schools, although it has faced opposition from some prominent institutions like Michigan and USC. It turns out SC and MICH are right!

DON: Since 2022, California’s main state pension fund has committed $282 million to a Chinese venture capital firm that has been investigated by Congress for its close ties with the Chinese Communist Party.

Experts warn these investments are not only risky, given China’s record on property rights and growing economic challenges, but undermine the security of the United States and its allies.
