USC-Iowa Live Blog

It’s over and USC dodges a trap game before facing Oregon in the big one on Saturday.

And the Trojans take the lead, 26-21, a 16-0 run in the second half.

USC cuts lead to 21-19.

Did you know it is boiling at the Coliseum?

Iowa is carving up USC’s defense. USC can’t defend an offense that can run and pass.

The offense finally wakes up as Bryan Jackson scores on a 1-yard run out of the Wildcat.

USC’s defense getting exposed by a currently two-dimensional offense.

Shocking series for USC offensive line. Can’t protect QB or get a yard on fourth down.

Well, Iowa’s offense can pass the ball! Against the USC defense, of course.

Crowd check.

It’s a wet Homecoming at USC but that hasn’t stopped the alumni band or cheer groups.

The donor tailgate was less crowded, however.

  1. Word is that Waymo Jordan is a POSSIBLE to play! Which means he may be totally good to go for the quacks!

Hats off to USC’s foot and ankle surgeons!

      1. At 28-24 Iowa, I wasn’t either. Just the wrong way.

But as I usually tell Guarino, “I hope I’m wrong, but…”

My guess are always based on what I think will happen, not what I hope will happen. So glad to be wrong on this one!

  5. where are all those dudes complaining about big 10 officiating picking on poor sc? Maybe it makes a difference maybe it doesn’t. But 2 missed obvious face masks (both would have extended second half drives approaching the red zone) pulling a late hit call on the last drive (not blatant but definitely a violation) and a game ending personal foul from a yelling sideline assistant. Fortunate to get a deflection off a knee to get a pick and LR acts as if I beat Ohio state at the horseshoe.

    1. This isn’t meant as a knock — but they’re are more non-calls going on in a game than the ones pointed out by Yogi Roth.

Watch the game carefully. Don’t depend on the announcers to tell you what’s going on in terms of non calls. It’s not their job.

      1. I do Mike but PI and perimeter holding and even internal line holding is going on every play on both sides. It is the timing of when they decide to call it. There are stretches where there is PI or holding every time the ball goes in the air no matter who has the ball or even both the defender and the receiver. the new thing is now grabbing the corner as the ball is coming in and pulling him into you as the receiver to get the call. Like pulling a dude into you to draw the charge. drives will go by with no calls either way, then the ball will go in the air on 5 consecutive plays. Flag, flag, flag, flag, flag. all on the defense. Meanwhile half the time the reciever is pushing off or grabbing the dude and pulling him in and gets the call “cause his back is turned”. They need to reconfigure these rules cause this is boring football. The offense is already at a major advantage and now find ways to not even try to make a catch and will get an auto 15 every down or be left open for an easy catch. Boring

Not a Homer like homer simpson, but like a real sc honk, and that’s ok but he is the only one carrying the former pac 12 in the big 10 torch as well as the SC torch. Thats fine but he also fawns all over LR. Pretty obvious.

  6. The season now hinges on next week’s game in Autzen. While I was pleased to get the win against Iowa, in the rain no less, it was very much a home game. This team has been very different on the road this season, and not in a good way. It will take a different and mentally fortified mindset that seeks out and confronts adversity that I am not sure LR has the capability to render at this point. He actually might need to sit down and carefully watch the Indiana at Oregon game film, and perhaps even last week’s game that Iowa almost held on to win, to learn how to position the team and scheme for this one. Oregon has a defense and plenty of offensive talent to challenge what has been our own slow starting version. And remembering that LR tends to give up around 20 points on the road versus in the friendly confines of the Coliseum, we are left with a sobering conclusion. Do we have the talent on both sides of the ball to win against Oregon? Absolutely yes. Do we have the coaching acumen, discipline, and toughness to play and win in that hostile and noise filled raucous Eugene environment against Oregon? It appears we may already know that answer. The score will be 38-24. Any other prognostication would be welcomed and appreciated…

    1. Hard to know just how good the quacks are. They lost to Penn State and Indiana, barely beat Iowa, didn’t look impressive versus Wisconsin.

If you go by the common opponents (Iowa and Northwestern), the USC and Oregon are not so different.

      Three concerns for me are:

Road game, as you pointed out. USC’s best road performance (Nebraska) will not win this game.

On the bright side, the team seems to be coming together

USC’s O-line. They were deficient in the first half, they were dominant in the second half. What gives with that?

USC’s D-line. Again, they were deficient in the first half, they were dominant in the second half.

If USC’s O-line holds their own, meaning they can open holes such that 90% of the run plays get 3 yards, and they can give Jaden 3 seconds, then Makai and Jakobi are so good that USC can score 30 or more.

If the D-line can get some pressure on Moore and not get blown off the line to give up 7 plus yards rushing, then they can hold Oregon to under 30.

      1. The officiating just plain sucks on both sides. There is so much holding (grabbing the shirt), but Jakobi Lane gets called for that on that reception and run by Makai, turns a 30 yard play into an 8 yard play. There is so much PI on Makai, including the one in the end zone that was incomplete. There was King Miller who was down, the whistle blew, he got up to run and the Iowa defender totally threw him to the ground. No whistle.

If USC plays well, meaning their O-lines and D-lines are at their best, then I see them competitive with anyone outside the top 7 teams.

      2. Michael, I wrote similarly to Trojanation above.

If only they could the “second half team” in the first half…

        First and second half differences:

Second half total offense was around 240 yards, first half was around 120 yards.

Second half total defense was around 140 yards, first half total defense was around 210 yards.

Jaden looked so much more confident in the second half, he hung in against the rush and threw some darts to Makai and Jakobi.

I suspect the TEs will play a bigger role in the passing game on Saturday.

And let’s hope Waymo is back!

      3. Ya know what I think, 67? Even if Jordan is ready to go I’d start King Miller …and only go to Jordan if Oregon is stopping Miller. I like the chemistry when the Miller Brothers are in there together.

      4. “If USC plays well, meaning their O-lines and D-lines are at their best, . . . “

That is true 67 but of course that is true with every team in every football game. I think Oregon has a complete team. Very good at the line and with skill players and their quarterback is good. They probably have a talent advantage over us. I think we are going to need to score a lot of points to beat them. And probably get some big turnovers.

        Liked by 2 people

      5. Plowhorse, agree totally. My point is that the USC O-lines and D-lines are incredibly inconsistent – they are either dominated, or they dominate.

Iowa is regarded as having a top 5 O-line, so the fact that USC D-line came together in the second half is encouraging.

At least for me, it is hard to know how good Oregon is. Last year, they looked like they could be the best, and then they were totally blown out by OSU.

I will not be so surprised if USC loses by 17. And I will be only a little surprised if USC wins. It seems impossible to predict how well USC’s lines will play.
