Sunday Buzz: My View Of USC Victory Iowa

Before I discuss the game, did you know Iowa fans are livid over the officiating on Saturday?

They have a strong case on at least two face mask penalties that were not called, including one the play before an interception. You can watch them here and here.

This play looked out of bounds on TV but this angle is a little different.

There was also the late hit out of bounds that got waved off and the weird unsportsmanlike conduct at the end of the game when an Iowa assistant coach apparently walked over a line on to the field.

Anyways, this is Iowa’s issue, right or wrong.

  • For USC, it’s all to play for next weekend at Oregon at 12:30 p.m. PT on CBS. A College Football Playoff berth is at stake.

What I don’t understand is what people are watching? I keep hearing that USC is dominating the line of scrimmage and I see the opposite. Nebraska had 188 yards rushing led by Emmett Johnson with 165. Northwestern’s Caleb Komolafe gained 118 yards. Iowa rushed for 183 yards overall.

Oregon has a physical offensive line and unlike the previous three teams, a QB who can make an impact.

The USC defense cannot remain passive in Eugene like it did Saturday with an Iowa team that lacked explosiveness. USC blitzed just a few times. But it’s going to face a challenge like it hasn’t seen all season.

Frankly, Iowa has been considered a plodding team but it didn’t look like it in the first half. USC made it look dynamic at times.

The second half was a reversion to form. But if you take a half off against Oregon, the Ducks will do a lot more damage.

Some of the fanboys only take away the positives when USC wins. They want to talk about the second half against Iowa, which was a big improvement. But USC needs to play a complete game against Oregon.

Here’s a stat consider: USC has beaten Nebraska, who has lost 29 straight games to ranked opponents and Iowa, who has lost 13 straight games to ranked opponents. Oregon can beat a ranked team.

  1. Agree with Scott. If we play our usual soft coverage, “bend don’t break”, defense Oregon is going to kill us. Need to play tough man with our cornerbacks up on their receivers and dial up some blitz packages. We may give up some long plays but that’s better than consistent 10 play touchdown drives.

      1. As I noted in the earlier blog, the officiating is awful on both sides. So many PIs against Makai are not called, including the one in the end zone.

And for the Iowa guy who was ruled out of bounds: one can find a photo where it looks like his foot is down about a half inch from the line. And you can find a photo of where it is obvious his foot is down, and it is obvious he is out of bounds.

One interpretation of this is that his foot was not quite down on the first photo (e.g. it is a 1/2 inch above the ground), and when it is down, he is out of bounds.

They reviewed it from every angle possible, much more so than we can at home.

      2. #16? We are the Rodney Dangerfield of college football.

Ranked ahead of USC are BYU (best win was versus #23 Utah, by 3 points, they were blown out by Texas Tech), Georgia Tech is ranked ahead, they have one win vs. a ranked opponent, but that was Clemson early in the season, before people realized Clemson is a .500 team this season.

The computer rankings has USC 9, 10, and 14.

  2. USC needs their “second half team” to play in both the first and second half.

If the “first half team” show up, then they are down by 17 at halftime.

What Scott doesn’t talk about is that in the second half, Iowa gained only 120 yards of total offense, maybe 40 on the ground.

The D-line dominated the Iowa O-line in the second half, and Iowa had a top-5 O-line.

  3. Did anyone see the defensive holding penalty that was called on USC. The sack/fumble that was overturned by offsetting penalties. Funny how no replay was played to show the actual penalty.

    2 PI’s on Iowa that weren’t called.

The Big10 and their officiating. College football’s Area 51.

  4. I thought the IA receiver’s toe was the breaking point – they were poised to take back the lead when the LB shoved the IA receiver out of bounds. It was a close but accurate call and saved the day.
