Morning Buzz: USC-Iowa Report Card

Before I start the report card, did you Lincoln Riley’s comments last night that the media who are hyping the Oregon game also thought USC was “going to suck” this season but he never paid attention to them.

If Riley never paid attention to them, how did he know they said USC would suck? F-r-a-u-d.

QUARTERBACK

Jayden Maiava bounced back from his dreadful performance against Nebraska and threw 10 passes to Makai Lemon, who was nearly invisible against the Cornhuskers. Now comes his biggest challenge of the season.

Grade: B

RUNNING BACK

Iowa did a pretty good job tackling and containing the running game. King Miller will be vital against Oregon because USC’s defense will be under intense pressure.

Grade: C

WIDE RECEIVER

Makai Lemon and Ja’Kobi Lane caught 17 of the 23 completions. Good to get ball in your best players’ hands. Also shows why other receivers needed to transfer out after last season.

Grade: B+

OFFENSIVE LINE

They are extremely suspect in the first half, unable to protect Maiava or get a yard on fourth-and-1. Not that anyone in the media will not it.

Grade: D+

DEFENSIVE LINE

Iowa lost three offensive linemen during the game but still managed 183 yards rushing. Highly touted freshman Jahkeem “Thanos” Stewart caught the big ricochet interception. He also did not register a tackle in the game.

Grade: C-

LINEBACKER

They made 16 tackles, which in some part was because the defensive line wasn’t making many players. USC never sacked the quarterback, which shows D’Anton Lynn had a conservative game plan. Will he repeat that vs. Oregon?

Grade: C

DEFENSIVE BACKS

Iowa’s not known for the passing attack and it was apparent on some plays as the ball never got to open receivers.

Grade: C+

SPECIAL TEAMS

Sam Johnson wore No. 0, which was fitting on his 19-yard punt. At least Ryon Sayeri was Mr. Reliable, making both field goals.

Grade: C-

COACHING

The slow start in the first half was a coaching issue but Lincoln Riley deserves credit for convincing fans that beating two teams (Nebraska, Iowa) who are 0-42 against ranked teams is a signature achievement.

Grade: D+

        I thought Gabby said a few days back that he was going to the USC marching band pep rally today at the Palms at 2:00 and wanted to “meet up” with Scott. Instead, he spent the day trolling the blog. Once again a threat followed by a no show. That’s our Cowardly Gabby. All talk, no walk.

        DON: That’s how we know Cowardly Gabby is The Coward of the County. If she really lived in Las Vegas like she pretended to, she would be a total coward for not showing up to confront Scott that day after wasting 25 years stalking him on this site.

  7. Wolfe being a miserable dweeb again. A D+ for the OLine. Let’s see gave up 1 sack and averaged over 3.5 yards a carry. In case, Wolfe, you suck at math. 3.5 YPC gets you a first down with 3 carries. It’s called “move the chains” This was against a good Iowa defense that held Oregon to 18 points. The only one who should be getting D’s and F’s Wolfe is you for your immature posts.

  8. Makai Lemon and Ja’kobi Lane a B+? Scottie is a hard ass with a capital H. This may have been Makai’s best game of the season. Plus he is held on virtually every route he runs. A or A+ for these guys.

    D+ for the O-line? Agree, but for the first half only. Give them a B+/A- for an excellent second half against a top 10 defensive team.

    C- for special teams? What gives? Ryan Saeri still hasn’t missed, there were no f-ups, no big returns, and the punter, well, it was pouring rain, not an easy task to punt a wet football, that puppy is going to slide off your foot.

        Iowa was only giving up 12 points per game before USC, and Iowa was averaging 30 per game before USC.

        Well-done coaching staff, even though hard ass Scottie gave them a gratuitous D+

        Iowa lost to Oregon and Indiana by a combined 7 points. They beat Penn State, and beat MN and Wisc by a combined score of 78-3. They are a very good team.

  10. I disagree with your card this week Scott.

    “He also did not register a tackle in the game.”

    #4 did his job by occupying the OL and maintaining his gap so the LBs could make the tackles. That is the job of a DT and he did that very well.

    The guy is a true Freshman freak, he should still be in HS, he is their best DT, and he hustles every game. Give credit where it is due!
