Lincoln Riley Redefines Success At USC

Did you catch this comment from Lincoln Riley after the game last night?

“Nine wins with the schedule we play is a really good year. It was close to being a great, great year.”

If he thinks the schedule was tough, wait till he sees next year’s schedule.

And memo to Riley, nine wins is never a “really good year” at USC.

Imagine when he was introduced as USC coach four years ago if he said nine wins would be “really good year.”

People would have been appalled. Or thought he was joking. Meanwhile, Oklahoma is in the College Football Playoff.

  1. “With the schedule we play?!”

You mean the schedule you’re trying to make easier, by running away from a 100 year old rivalry like the little b*tch that you are?!

It doesn’t matter if you do hit 10 or 11 wins. If you’re doing it without playing the Irish, it’ll still have an asterisk next to it in the minds of all REAL Trojans.

  2. The top 2 teams in the rankings. 3 out of 4 with Oregon. The Big10 vs. the Big12. It’s the Big10 hands down. There’s a reason Notre Dame doesn’t play in a conference. Scheduling a military academy is a guaranteed win. I guess Wolfe couldn’t cut as a real journalist.

DON: The failing World Champion LA Times and Daily Snooze are not “real journalism.” They are dinosaurs.

  3. to quote Bobby Baccalieri: to the victor goes the spoils.

congrats Southern Cal on a great victory over the equivalent of a pick-up mud bowl team.

best of luck in the Holiday Bowl, what is that, seventh time in last 10 yrs?

SLR has nearly the exact same 4yr record as Coach Hackett who never made over a million clams a year.

The daily news is such a barometer for LA sports. Tennis boy, Ball Brothers, and Mora have done so much for LA sports.

      2. obviously a typo….i tasked a Cadre intern to bring me the four year stats on Riley vs Helton and the kid messed up and typed in Hackett instead of Helton. i was distracted on account of i was in the middle of renewing the Preferred Plus contract for 2026. but SLR was 30-15 vs Heltons 31-14 at the 45 game point in their respective careers. but hey, you trOXans spend your money how you see fit. (chortle)

  4. Agree with Scott. This wasn’t a tough schedule. We played tough road games against Oregon and ND but both teams were beatable. Neither was in the top 5 and had weaknesses. We should have won every other game. And has the defense improved? The side of the ball we spent all that money on with elite coaches and transfers. I don’t think so.

    1. Transfers Keyshawn Silver and D.J. Peavy. Both were expected to make a major impact. Instead, Illinois and ND and others ran it right up the gut. The overpaid Silver was no factor and Peavy didn’t even contribute at cornerback unless it was to give up a big play.
    2. Reports of Devon Tompkins, Cam Crawford, and Anthony Lucas dominating the line of scrimmage in practice. Coach Nua spoke glowingly of them. They had reportedly taken a huge jump in development. All disappointed. Our D line sucked. Got pushed around in multiple games. I guess Coach Henny and dawg work was over blown.
    3. Eric Gentry and Desmon Stephens were supposed to be “first rounders” according to Coach Rob Ryan. What a joke. Gentry really regressed. Stephens would not start on most BIG and SEC teams. We are in dire need of a transfer at linebacker. We lack talent at this position.
    4. What happened to Kamari Ramsey. Why haven’t our cornerbacks developed. I thought Doug Belk and Tavon Reed were supposed to be great teachers/developers. It didn’t happen.

    1. Unfortunately, Ramsey and Fitzgerald have missed the last few games with injury.

Gentry was looking like an All-American up to the Oregon game, but his game against the quacks and the sucla game were uninspiring. Stephens has significantly increased his tackles, but I agree he wouldn’t start on a lot of teams in the top 10.

The issue remains that USC skill players could probably start almost anywhere, but the big uglies on the o-line and defensive players are very different.

DON: Riley Coyote had two NFL QBs and won nothing. He is a failure.

  5. Hes’s right. With smarter clock management he beats Illinois & voila you have a “great great year. You on the other hand, do you even have a gig working for traditional media? Calling in to Petros is not a gig.

  6. I mean he is right… 9 wins is a really good year. But it’s not great, and USC needs to be great. Riley isnt hiding from that.

What he IS hiding from is playing a hard schedule. He’s trying go water things down and run from tradition. I cant get behind that.
