USC Morning Buzz: Is QB Facing Changing Of The Guard?

I will discuss the play of Jayden Maiava this season later in the week but it appears some USC fans want Maiava to turn pro because of speculation Husan Longstreet will transfer if he doesn’t start next season.

This is the world we live in apparently. Maiava’s been inconsistent in some key games but I don’t know if I toss aside someone with 27 career starts for someone who has yet to play one quarter in a college game.

The fans always want the shiny new objects, of course. Where would Longstreet go? Arizona State needs a QB.

  • When Steve Sarkisian called his first season at USC a “total success” after winning nine games overall, I was highly critical. Lincoln Riley called winning nine regular-season games “a really good season.”

What’s awful is Riley is saying that in Year 4, not Year 1.

I got an email from a reader Sunday saying 10 victories is a great accomplishement because USC has not had many 10-win seasons in its history. You know why? The season used to be 10 games or less until the 1970’s. Doh!

  • Why was Lincoln Riley going for 2 points with a 27-10 lead over UCLA? So Gage Roy could throw a pass? It wasn’t a great look.
  • A USC alum told me Saturday he wants Carson Palmer to be hired as the Trojans’ head coach.

If Palmer got hired, he wouldn’t try to weasel out of the Notre Dame game or have flat performances against UCLA.

  1. Wolf, once again, you’re suffering from confirmation bias. USC has played in 11 or more games a season 71 times since 1925, for an overall average of 11.83 games per season.

With an overall winning percentage of 68.4%. This season, they are at 75%…….It’s amazing how you continue to call a strike a ball.

  2. Yes, a 75% winning percentage means Riley will be around another year. But his overall winning percentage is only 1.6% higher than Clay’s and 2.2% higher than Lane’s.

You can cry about Wolf’s assessment, but he’s not far off. Let’s hope the incoming recruiting class remains where it is. Commitments are good reason to be optimistic, but nothing to celebrate.

  5. Husan Longstreet is leaving after one year? You really need to check your sources on this one. The kid is receiving NIL money and is being developed in practice by one of the top quarterback coaches. He is not going anywhere.

  6. Maiava’s QB rating was second in the country this year, but no one is talking about him being one of the first QBs picked if he were to enter the draft.

Given how fast contract money drops from a higher pick to a lower pick, I assume he will stay another year.

But USC will lose Makai Lemon and Ja’Kobi Lane to the draft.

Those guys are so good that they substantially boosted Jaden’s numbers this year.

So who will start in those WR positions next year?

  7. Seasons with 10 Regular Season Games Before 1970

Several college football programs, including USC, played 10 regular season games before the official expansion in 1970 due to scheduling arrangements, historical context, and some schools’ unique situations. Historical Context

    • Pre-1970 Structures: Prior to 1970, many schools played a variety of game lengths, driven largely by regional scheduling and conference decisions. Some conferences allowed a higher number of games, while others had fewer.
    • Independent Teams: Schools that were not part of major conferences often arranged for additional games, leading to unique cases where certain teams played up to 10 games in a season.

Specific Cases of Early 10-Game Seasons

    • USC’s Unique Schedule: USC, particularly, adapted its schedule based on different opponents and bowl game arrangements, sometimes reaching 10 games in certain seasons before 1970. The number of games could fluctuate due to external factors such as rivalries, invitations to postseason bowls, and postseason playoffs that built momentum in earlier years.

    Changes Leading to Standardization

    • NCAA Regulations: The NCAA began to standardize game limits, leading to clarity in the game schedules and encouraging the trend of 10-game seasons across more programs as time went on.

As a result, while the norm standardized with the 1970 introduction, certain teams already started embracing longer seasons due to various factors in their scheduling.

  8. Longstreet will likely stay. Maiva is likely waiting for an NFL eval, but could be 50/50… and I wouldn’t be as down on his NFL prospects, given our O-line lack of protection and yet the still admirably low sack rate he suffered. Hines will be a solid receiver next year, and I am not so sure Jakobi Lane will go pro, although Lemon no doubt will.

But those are not the moves we should be most interested in. Not sure whether it was the hype around the incoming NIL talent or not, but this team should have done more with what it had. The ucla first half was ample proof of that. This points directly to the coaching, and the most clearly lacking piece needed for USC is a predatory defense. LR is just a soft coach, as evidenced by the need to have towel wavers and the team jumping up and down on the sideline to generate some energy. Not sure where that will lead us…

  9. Scott you call out the fans for wanting a “shiny new object” but then offer support for a coach who just finished his FIRST year of coaching HIGH SCHOOL? It’s one and the same under your description. Come on now.

    1. I don’t think Scott was offering his support. I think what he was trying to say is, “Yeah, that might sound crazy. But at least Carson wouldn’t try to weasel out of the ND game.”

Not a ringing endorsement, just stating the fact that most coaches who came to USC would know that the ND rivalry is part of the deal. Whoever our A.D. is should always tell a prospective coach, “To offset the strength of Notre Dame, you get to play UCLA every year!”
