Notre Dame Decides To Skip Bowl Game

Notre Dame will not play in a bowl game after failing to make the College Football Playoff.

I’ve admired Irish coach Marcus Freeman but this is a weak move and sends a bad message.

Is this the future? Teams that don’t make the College Football Playoff will just skip the bowls? That’s not great for the bowl system.

By the way, Ross Dellenger of Yahoo reports “Notre Dame is assured of a CFP berth if it is ranked in the top 12 starting next year. If this year’s situation unfolds next year, the final at-large team (Miami) would have gotten bumped for No. 11 Notre Dame.”

  1. Notre Dame failing to play in a lesser bowl game is akin to a kid not being chosen in a pickup game and hence announcing, “Sorry, but I’m taking my ball home with me now”

    1. KAM: Or it’s the best way to smack the networks who now control college football right in the face.

DON: The networks lose out on ratings with no ND. It’s like the Yankees not being in the MLB playoffs. Love them or hate them, they garner ratings unlike James Madison or Tulane. That fact seems to be foreign to Riley Coyote.

    1. KAM: In the least surprising revelation ever, the NYT — which has vocally and vehemently championed Zelensky and US financing of the war in Ukraine — documents how Zelensky and his top aides facilitated the stealing of billions in “aid during the Senile Joe Crime Family Regime.

DON: Why are the Pro-Zelensky Fake News Media suddenly telling the truth now? That’s the obvious question.

  3. Notre Dame fuming over losing out to Miami for playoff participation despite having lost to Miami in a head-to-head game is similar to 1978 when Alabama lobbied for a share of the national championship with SC despite having lost to the Trojans during the season

    1. KAM: Bear Bryant’s Tide were named ’78 national champs by the AP despite losing head to head against UPI champ USC by a decisive score of 24-14. Yet now ND is denied because they lost head to head against Miami.

DON: Weird how Alabama always seems to get their way.

  4. There is nothing sweeter than Irish tears.

    When Irish eyes are crying

Sure it’s like a morn in Spring,

In the lilt of Irish anguish

You can hear the angels sing.

    When Irish hearts are crushed

All the world seems bright and gay

  5. you have to applaud the Rudys for showing rare integrity and clout by dictating their own terms in the face of a bizarre snub. maybe the trOXans would garner some respect by saying no to the underwhelming Alamo Bowl. really, who is going to watch the Alamo bowl??

  6. Typical Domers. A bowl game is supposed to be a reward to the players for a good season. So they can go to a city and enjoy themselves and play a extra game. The Domer administration couldn’t care less about the players.

    1. I guess you didn’t hear what Notre Dame’s New A. D. said: “All our players will still get a gift package —just like the Rose Bowl gives out — with candy and Target Certificates worth $200….all on us!”

    2. KAM: A reward? None of the money the bowl teams receives goes to the players. Why would players want to risk injury and hurt their marketability in the Portal in the future for a meaningless bowl game no one watches or cares about? All that matters now is making the playoff or the season is a failure.

DON: The bowl games are a vestige of a time long gone. The Granddaddy of Them All, the Rose Bowl, has been devalued to now being a quarterfinal playoff game. And the non-playoff games are even more devoid of tradition and meaning.

  7. Breaking News: The Los Angeles Times is reporting that USC is trying to withdraw from the Alamo Bowl in order to play Notre Dame in the Coliseum on January 1st. The Driving Force? Lincoln Riley! “People think I don’t want to play Notre Dame. Not true. My only complaint is that we only get to play them once per season. Now we have a chance to right that problem and I say ‘let’s go for it!”

    1. Maybe Riley will agree to play ND in Barstow. It may help quell the complaints that he is a chickensh*t but I doubt it. People have been selling Cowardly Riley T-shirts outside the Coliseum and its really bothering him.

  8. Ok –here is some actual, real news [but I’ll forgive you guys for not believing me]: USC had been installed a a six and a half point favorite over TCU…the Over/Under is 59.

      1. Yes, it’s weird not even knowing who’s playing —especially if you want to bet the game. Lincoln said he’d “clear up the mystery in coming weeks.” Does that mean before the game [December 30th]? Or directly after the game [when the “news” will seem a bit anti-climatic]?

  9. KAM: In addition to star players refusing to play in bowl games, four college football teams have now announced that they are refusing to play in bowl games this year:

    Baylor

    Notre Dame

    Kansas State

    Iowa State

DON: Time to end this farce

  10. Why does Notre Dame get such treatment ? Make them be in a conference, not give them an autobid for being ranked in the top 12.
