USC Morning Buzz: Surprising Additions To Transfer Portal

Some surprising additions to the transfer portal this morning.

Defensive tackle Devan Thompkins and tight end Walker Lyons have entered the portal.

Thompkins had the most tackles (31) of any defensive tackles at USC this season along with three sacks.

Lyons caught 20 passes for 223 yards with two touchdowns. With USC losing Lake McRee, its top two tight ends are set to depart.

Some believed Lyons’ younger brother, QB Ryder Lyons, might eventually end up at USC with his brother. Ryder Lyons is the Gatorade state player of the year for California. He is committed to BYU.

I guess there won’t be any re-signing announcements for these two players.

  1. TCU is gonna be a tough one for USC. Every College Football Publication rated QB Josh Hoover as the best or tied for best QB in the Big 12 [along with Baylor and Tech’s QB’s] —-most of their receivers [also rated at the top of the Big 12] are playing…. unlike ours. And they’re coached by Sonny Dykes….. who is, in effect, Lincoln’s Daddy.

And… we’re playing a Texas team with a ton of pride in their backyard…. in The Alamo Bowl.

      1. It’s meaningless…but it would be fun to watch if the best players played [which isn’t exactly the way it’s working out for us….. TCU has different ideas: it matters tremendously to their players]…..

      2. KAM: Except for the ones who choogle…Among the TCU players who will have to decide whether it’s worth it to play in the bowl game are three seniors, wide receiver Eric McAlister, safety Bud Clark and linebacker Kaleb Elarms-Orr.

Clark, a second-team All-Big 12 safety, missed the final two games of the season, and he’s also already accepted an invitation to the Senior Bowl. Being fully healthy for that all-star game is something Clark has to consider.

        Elarms-Orr, a first-team All-Big 12 linebacker, seems likely to play considering the high-profile opponent.

McAlister, a first-team All-Big 12 wide receiver, is the biggest name to watch, along with USC counterpart Makai Lemon. McAlister was one of the best receivers in the nation and seems a safe bet to be at least a mid-round selection in the 2026 NFL draft.

DON: So far we are the ones who are most depleted.

      1. …But….since So Cal is right [again]…. and a certain someone still claims to be receiving smells by reading replies….. I guess there is no other possible explanation: a certain someone is smelling him/herself….. and simple-mindedly coming to the conclusion it’s coming from his computer screen….

      1. GEORGE —THE PROBLEM WITH THE ALAMO BOWL IS THAT ONE SIDE’S PLAYERS AREN’T TAKING IT SERIOUSLY [THAT WOULD BE OUR SIDE] AND THE OTHER SIDE IS TAKING IT DEADLY SERIOUSLY [THAT WOULD BE TCU’S SIDE]…….

      2. KAM: By this afternoon we will know who has opted out for TCU.

DON: Their first Alamo Bowl practice is going on as we speak!

    1. GOOD POINT COUNSELOR. MAYBE IT SHOULD BE WRITTEN INTO THEIR NIL DEALS THAT IF THEY DO THAT THEY AGREE TO BE FLOGGED. FIFTY LASHES BY THE HEAD COACH PLUS A LASH FROM EACH FAN THEY DISSAPOINT

  2. I am surprised over both transfers. I recall months ago Lyons was interviewed and said he really liked the academics and student life at the university. His mom seemed to want Ryder to join his brother at USC. She has a good relationship with Riley. I bet this has its origins in the NIL contracts given to the incoming players. If Mark Bowman gets 2 million a year, what is Lyons worth. And how does USC respond when Lyons says I was the second rated tight end coming out of high school two years ago. I want a NIL package worth at least 1/3 of what Bowman gets.

I also heard that Joey Olson is tearing it up in practice. And USC has both Bowman and the JUCO transfer coming in so maybe Lyons just isn’t worth the NIL dollars necessary to make him stay.
