USC Morning Buzz: One Reason For Dragged Out Coaching Search

Here’s a pretty good reason the search for a defensive coordinator seems to have dragged on this long: Someone involved has told me that USC has told candidates they must keep the entire defensive staff.

That would mean keeping four assistant coaches. It’s quite a condition because most self-respecting coordinators want to bring at least 1-2 guys with them.

It will really be interesting to see if former TCU coach Gary Patterson, who was elected to the College Football Hall of Fame on Tuesday, would accept this condition. If he does, he is desperate to return to coaching.

Also, if coaches are told to keep the staff, it doesn’t exactly sound like anyone on the staff will get promoted to defensive coordinator. If that happens, it will signify the search collapsed.

  1. I’s like to comment — but it’s 3:30 in the morning & I’d catch hell from a certain someone….

Oh, crap. I already blew my cover just by getting this far…..

…so here goes: My personal opinion is: Riley asked his top defensive recruits if they’re happy with the staff that recruited them… and they said “yes.”…

    1. KAM: Marcus Freeman and Notre Dame won the transfer portal

Monday, Notre Dame added defensive lineman Keon Keeley from Alabama, receiver Quincy Porter from Ohio State, and cornerbacks Jayden Sanders and DJ McKinney from Colorado. As far as portal transfers go, these are some heavy hitters with real physical upside.

DON: While Notre Dame may not have the most portal players heading to South Bend, the Irish’s haul is the most talented on average per player, according to on3.

      1. KAM: Yes, USC will never have to play ND in the regular season or playoffs since under Riley Coyote USC doesn’t make the national championship playoffs!

        DON: Thanks, Riley Coyote!

  2. Well, I’m back after a long absence due to various issues.

My old user name, BK for short , was taken over by someone and used to attack people, so yeah, until Wolf gets a blog site that doesn’t allow that, well……..

USC continues to drop the ball and will continue to drop the ball as long as Riley and Cohen are employed and the BOT is more interested in WOKE than athletics, which if you haven’t noticed at USC these days, it’s pretty bad aside from track.

    1. Amen. Caught the Dead’s great concert at the Boston Music Hall in April of ’71. The place was smoking, rocking, Weir, Garcia, Pigpen, et al were on fire.

      1. When the Dead were on they ripped it up, 1977 was a great year for the Dead, I highly recommend listening to shows from that year, many of them are on youtube and Spotify. 77 tour kicked off at the old Swing Auditorium in San Bernardino, CA.

  3. Isn’t it obvious that USC is making a pitch for the Indiana University DC, and they can’t announce the hire until after the national championship game on Monday. They have backed up the Brinks truck and promised the HC job when Riley leaves the position. Dan, Class of 1962.

    1. I don’t know if it is obvious Dan but I hope you are right. Doubt that the Indiana coordinator will accept the job if he can’t hire any of his own position coaches. The defensive culture at USC has to change. There were games last year, including the Alamo bowl, where you didn’t see great effort. How do you change the culture without changing the coaches.

      1. Wrong, Plow. The culture, according to Coach Riley, was just fine….except that the defense made “one mistake at the worst possible moment”….

      2. If we could get the DC from Indiana, I would let him hire the next school president. If you want to be the best, then hire the best. If he wipes the floor with Miami after what he did to Ohio State, Bama and the Quacks, he is worth whatever it takes to get him. Give him an HC salary and put in his contract that he is guaranteed to be the next HC. That way he can work on the culture, and LC can be the offensive coordinator.

  4. Scooter,

SC is a sh%t show. Cohen the AD, has no clue what she is doing. She would have been fired at Taco Lita for her incompetency. Riley is just stealing money from SC. The worst part is, SC is allowing him to steal.

      1. KAM: Riley Coyote is going to demand a raise after her hears this: REPORTS: New York Giants, John Harbaugh finalizing $100M contract. “According to multiple reports, the Giants offered Harbaugh a five-year deal that could be worth as ‍much as $100 million.

DON: The 63-year-old head coach was only out of work eight days after the Baltimore Ravens fired him over the phone last week, ending their 18-year partnership after missing the playoffs.” Way to go, Ravens!

      1. Most of these accusations of harassment seem rather tame. Asked his research assistant to lunch. So what. Said his children needed a mother and he felt uncomfortable buying his daughter pads. So what. Asked her to shop for his daughter. Unprofessional but so what. Touched her hair and said he wish his hair was still black. Again unprofessional. The worst thing he did was slap her in the azz with a rolled up newspaper. Really? That caused you to suffer severe emotional distress. Hell Clinton had his security guards bring Paula Jones to his hotel and then dropped his pants in front of her. Unbuttoned Kathleen Willey’s blouse while she was crying over her husband losing his job and asking him to give her a job. And then there is Monica Lewinski. Whatever happened to the really interesting harassment.

      1. MG: Agree with your last post. If the professor had given her a better grade or evaluation, there would be no sexual harassment claim and that is a shame. These claims are now weapons in the workforce. Fail me or deny a promotion and I will claim sexual harassment. Makes you think twice about hiring attractive females.

I had a trial with the judge, Barbara Meiers. She is a loose cannon. I wanted to use a biomechanical expert in an automobile accident case and she said “so is he going to testify that the person wasn’t hurt because the property damage shows a minor impact that would not likely cause body movement or injury such as whiplash.” Yes your honor. “Don’t bother. I was once involved in a bumper to bumper accident with very little property damage but I hurt for months.” Gee, thanks for the impartiality your honor.
