USC Saturday Buzz: Re-signing Means Nothing

You know why it was a dumb idea for USC to announce every player who re-signed for next year?

Because it was meaningless.

USC AJ Tuitele was announced as re-signing on Christmas Eve. But he entered the transfer portal Friday night. Excuse me?

Should every signing that gets announced have a disclaimer: Doesn’t mean anything.

Yes, that is college football today. Oh, and USC deleted the tweet where it said Tuitele had re-signed.

This is my problem: When social media impressions are just as important to the program as going out and signing a top linebacker. By the way, how does USC look at linebacker? I don’t consider Washington linebacker Deven Bryant to be the answers to the position’s shortcomings.

There was some good news as USC did re-sign defensive back Alex Graham on Friday. Is it binding?

  2. USC Quarterback depth: Will untested recruit Lincoln-Way East (Ill.) four-star Jonas Williams be the back up for Maiava? He was the state of Illinois all-time leader in passing yards and passing touchdowns and No. 8 rated quarterback, per the 247Sports Composite Rankings.

DON: Does USC follow the same path they did with Husan Longstreet last season and have Williams as the backup, giving him the opportunity to see extended playing time in blowouts or does sixth-year senior vagabond Sam Huard, who previously played second and third string in his two years with the Washington Huskies, started for the lowly Cal Poly Mustangs, and held a clipboard for the Utah Utes? Talk about no depth!

    1. Gabby — I think if you watch Jonas’ highlight tape…and his lengthy interview videos on YouTube you’ll come away with the feeling he’s special. Riley needs to crash course this kid in camp –he could be the QB USC needs.

      1. Max! Please don’t mention that name!

        P.S.

If Clay had listened to Scott we coulda seen Sam start before the Utah game. Sam was that year’s Jonas Williams.

  3. The NCAA is no longer the governing body for college sports, all it is good for is supporting the national championships in the non-football sports. Until the FBS administrators hire an overall commissioner and develop a binding contract like in all professional sports, it is going to be a year to year race to see who can sign the most key players. It is no longer about the schools and even the coaches, its all about the money and non-binding contracts. Dan, Class of 1962

  4. Glad we got Alex Graham. He will likely start next year. Was slated to start before he was injured.

Heard that Cal linebacker Luke Ferrilli was suppose to transfer to Clemson but has now decommitted. Apparently he is very good and Ole Miss and Lane Kiffin were recruiting him hard. If we landed him, it would fill a big defensive hole.

  5. I am glad that players have more control over their futures than back in the day, but what we are seeing now is nuts.

Jonas looks too good to be true on his highlights. Great arm, he throws it on a line. And he has a bit of Caleb in him in terms of avoiding sacks and making the crazy throw after eluding 6 tacklers.

    1. He also has the “intangibles” — listen to his interview at the Elite 11: he talks about learning how important it is to root for his quarterback competitors….how they should all see themselves as brothers…

      1. It wouldn’t shock me if Jonas started at some point in the season, and kept that job.

For better or worse, USCs O-line is back. They should be better than last year, and in a few games last year, they were really good.

  6. KAM: The official word out of Iran is that you personally are responsible for thousands having been killed

DON: That’s a stretch, even for them

KAM: By the way, who you like with Indiana-Miami?

DON: It seems you could not get enough points if you take Miami, but they play the games for a reason

      1. Miami dominated Ohio State in a way that I couldn’t have imagined. This one is going to boil down to the additional physical development that 23-year olds have versus younger guys.
