USC Morning Buzz: One Way To Get Lincoln Riley To Play Notre Dame (Maybe)

USC returns its entire starting offensive line from last season.

Is that such a good thing?

I mean, the line wasn’t all that great (unless you believe the fan boys).

  • The Big Ten wants to expand the College Football Playoff to an amazing 24 teams! Would Lincoln Riley play Notre Dame or anyone good in non-conference games if that happens?
  • Did you see Eric Musselman’s frustration at his press conference after blowing a lead to Purdue on Saturday? He was not the super-fun guy who wears a football uniform or rides a Zamboni machine.

He blamed the officiating. He blamed injuries.

My favorite part is when he was asked if he ever thought about putting guard Ryan Cornish back in the game?

“No. Ryan Cornish was minus-12 in 7 minutes. Never entered my mind. And it still hasn’t entered my mind.”

  1. An expanded playoff is needed for one simple reason, money. But, not money for profit and the rich getting richer. But, rather, to allow schools that are not rich to compete in the playoffs. However, the playoffs if they do enlarge should go to either 16 or 32 games so that every team has to play an equal number of rounds. Having four or eight teams getting a first round bye is basically unfair. The playoff bowls are the only meaningful bowl games; so an enlarged playoff would make 16 or 32 bowls meaingful. Eliminate the conference championship games, play a twelve game regular season schedule with all games needing to be against FBS opponents, all FBS conference champions are in the playoffs along with other teams selected by the playoff committee. Fairness, equality and opportunity just like in college basketball. Fight on, Dan, Class of 1962.

P.S. And, every team including ND need to be in a conference. ND in the Big Ten could play USC every year to continue a tradition.

    1. I agree that no team should have a first-round bye. And the schedule today does make ND’s independent status stick out like a sore thumb, but they make so much off of being an indie that they won’t give that up willingly.

      1. Notre Dame has used its national brand and historical publicity starting in the 1920’s with the help of the USC game to dictate how they are treated. They are no longer the pinnacle of the sport and the major conferences should dictate that they join a conference. They could join the Sunbelt Conference for all I care, but there should be a stop to ND carving out special treatment because of their history. USC has as many national championships and more Heisman Trophy winners. Alabama has more national championships. Ohio State and Michigan are traditional powers. ND is no longer special and should not be treated as if they are special. Dan, Class of 1962

thanks wolfman for seeing right thru his deflections and finger-pointing! BTW, you Dummies on this blog are who the wolfman means when he disparagingly says “Fan Boys”! just making sure.

  3. That Bears game last night was special. It made me think of how could USC not have done better when Caleb was here. The answer: losing to Utah, 43-42, losing to Tulane, 46-45, and losing to Utah again in the championship game., despite Caleb passing for nearly 400 yards since we had no running game that day. I doubt Riley will ever get closer than that 2022 season. Why did Riley insist on bringing Grinch?

    1. I can only think the answer to the Grinch question is found in something Peter Carroll said when a certain Oregon Coach was running circles around him: “We just need to get our offense clicking and find a way of slowing them down a little.”

That is Riley’s Philosophy of the game. It will always be his philosophy of the game. It is the hill he wants to die on.

    1. It won’t be that bad, GT. But wish or no wish, it’ll be 8-4, +/- 1 game. That’s just who Riley is. Getting out of the ND game and scheduling creampuffs will improve that by 1 game, nothing more.
