Morning Buzz: USC Bows On Defensive Change

Last week, I wrote USC was telling prospective defensive coordinators that it wanted to keep the coaching staff intact.

And I said most self-respecting defensive coordinators want to bring some assistants with them.

That explains why USC safeties coach Doug Belk was fired. Did Gary Patterson demand it? He hasn’t been hired yet but he seems to be the focus right now.

I’ll just point out here that Paul Gonzales, who spent 10 seasons coaching the secondary under Patterson, is currently the passing-game coordinator and cornerbaacks coach at Baylor. And Dave Aranda’s contract is not holding Baylor hostage like Little Lord Riley at USC, so job security is shaky in Waco, Texas.

More importantly, even if a defensive whiz like Patterson gets hired, he won’t be able to make the complete transformation necessary unless he gets Riley to commit to physical practices next season. That is what the defense requires.

      1. KAM: Good news, MG! D’Anton Lynn, Penn State’s new defensive coordinator, is bringing a familar coach with him to State College.

DON: Ikaika Malloe, who replaced Lynn as UCLA’s defensive coordinator in 2024, is joining Penn State’s staff as defensive line coach and run-game coordinator.

  2. Gary Patterson would be a very good hire. As a Hall of Fame coach with a proven track record, he will definitely not be afraid to speak up in coaching meetings. Patterson’s former DB coach would be a good hire as well….he could teach how to cover without holding on every play and how to double cover the opponents best receiver. Thanks Scott for this information, and let’s hope that it comes to fruition. Fight on, Dan, Class of 1962

  5. I think people screaming for more physical practices would be shocked to see how physical the practices were for Indiana and Miami before the championship game. It’s the standard bring set during the game that’s lacking. Don’t allow mistakes in practice and you’ll end up with better assignments execution. Clearly, this coaching staff is overreliant on too few players. Tape doesn’t lie. Your bench is your best teacher, use it wisely and you’ll win more often than not.
