USC Finally Hires Gary Patterson

It took awhile but USC finally announced the hiring of Gary Patterson this morning.

Like I said before, here is what someone who coached with Patterson told me about him.

“It will be a good hire if they get the old Gary Patterson and not old Gary Patterson,” he said.

Either way, it will be an upgrade from D’Anton Lynn.

And once again: To give Patterson a fighting chance, USC needs to restore physical practices. That is what will change performances.

  1. I can’t stress how important it is to have a defensive coordinator who NEVER coached in the Big Ten …

      1. Cant wait to see how this experiment turns out. What took so long? Well, they tried everyone else and no one would take the job who had half a brain because they know LR doesn’t know D$ck about Defense. And given how LR’s viewed, they wouldn’t take the job knowing he will be gone in a couple of years and have no job security. Add to that, our decades long run of poor defensive efforts and poor defensive player recruiting- has made anyone worth their salt wary of coming here. GP had no worries as he’s 66, has got nothing to lose so he could care less what happens 2-3 years from now. But how is a 66 year old dude gonna recruit and attract quality defensive players….

DAN: And win the recruits over talking about how great Welcome Back Kotter was.

  2. Coach Patterson definitely has the resume to demand physical practices. And, get better coaching at all levels of the defense. This hire is something that all Trojan fans should be optimistic about. Fight on, Dan, Class of 1962

    1. Stepping out of character…and being momentarily serious…. I agree, Ambitious. Patterson could lower our “points against” category by one whole T. D. per game. And that’s more than we need.

      2. I can understand any concern about Gary Patterson’s age and his motivation; however, as a Hall of Fame coach, I don’t believe that he would have taken this position if he didn’t feel that he could handle it. Turning USC into a playoff contender would be the frosting on his career cake. We shall see, but, also, maybe at my age, I am seeing a sixty something as young. And, like the saying goes, it isn’t work if you are having fun. If Gary Patterson enjoys coaching, he will do a great job for our school. And, I hope that LR does have a great relationship with him and respects him. Fight on, Dan, Class of 1962

  3. This coming Monday pick up your copy of the ‘CA Post’ from any (that still exist) newsstand (7/11 for instance). Dylan Hernandez, formerly with the LAT spoke about the move this afternoon on 570 AM – the LAT is now what it always was – a sinkhole for progressive (communist) advocates led by the daily Pravda editor Michael Hilzik.

Gary Patterson, the former head coach of TCU football, faced backlash and ultimately parted ways with the university after he repeated a racial slur while addressing a player about its use. He publicly apologized, stating that the word is “unacceptable in any context.”

Gary Patterson, the former head coach of the TCU Horned Frogs football team, faced significant backlash after using a racial slur during a team meeting. The incident occurred when he was addressing linebacker Dylan Jordan about the use of the slur in practice. Patterson repeated the word while instructing Jordan to refrain from using it.Apology and Reactions

Following the incident, Patterson issued a public apology, stating that the use of the word is “unacceptable in any context.” He emphasized his commitment to fighting racial injustice and acknowledged the need to uphold the same standards he expects from his players.Player Response

The situation escalated when several players, including Jordan, protested by refusing to attend practice the following day. Jordan clarified that while Patterson did not direct the slur at him, the act of using it was inappropriate regardless of context. Some teammates defended Patterson, suggesting that his comments were taken out of context.Consequences

DON: While Patterson’s actions led to widespread criticism, he was not immediately fired. However, the incident raised questions about accountability and the treatment of coaches in similar situations, especially those with a history of success. The university’s leadership, including the chancellor, acknowledged the need for a teachable moment regarding the use of such language.

    1. Let’s see, a black player at TCU yells out “nigg–” in practice. Coach Patterson admonishes him in the locker room by telling him not to say “nigg–” , that the word is hateful and he won’t tolerate its use. The same player that made the racial slur later criticizes the coach for being racially insensitive. The coach should have said “n word” not the actual word that the player used. The player then demands a public apology and gets it.

Anyone else see the absurdity in all of this? In a normal world the player would apologize to the team and being running wind sprints after practice and that would be the end of it. But we don’t live in a normal world. At the university, we follow “the path or righteousness.”

      1. When someone uses an offensive word in your presence you CANNOT correct him or her: That’s Complicity! As a matter of fact, it’s worse than complicity: it’s 100 times worse! You are more responsible than the originator of the comment.

I hope this makes sense to you.

Weird how all the local LA and USC media ignored why Gary Patterson was fired.

DON: The Fake News doesn’t want to bring up the utter hypocrisy.

  6. LR and the athletic administration have done what Scott has been preaching for since LR was hired. He hired a proven special teams coach and a proven DC. Now, see how they work out. Scott, you got what you said was needed so be happy for once. There are no sure things except death and taxes. If you keep making the same mistakes, it is insanity; but if you try something different like these hires, it is called progress. Fight on, Dan, Class of 1962
