It took awhile but USC finally announced the hiring of Gary Patterson this morning.
Like I said before, here is what someone who coached with Patterson told me about him.
“It will be a good hire if they get the old Gary Patterson and not old Gary Patterson,” he said.
Either way, it will be an upgrade from D’Anton Lynn.
And once again: To give Patterson a fighting chance, USC needs to restore physical practices. That is what will change performances.
A sports colunist just wrote that Patterson won’t matter to Wiley and SC because Wiley will never have a good defense

I can’t stress how important it is to have a defensive coordinator who NEVER coached in the Big Ten …

Cant wait to see how this experiment turns out. What took so long? Well, they tried everyone else and no one would take the job who had half a brain because they know LR doesn’t know D$ck about Defense. And given how LR’s viewed, they wouldn’t take the job knowing he will be gone in a couple of years and have no job security. Add to that, our decades long run of poor defensive efforts and poor defensive player recruiting- has made anyone worth their salt wary of coming here. GP had no worries as he’s 66, has got nothing to lose so he could care less what happens 2-3 years from now. But how is a 66 year old dude gonna recruit and attract quality defensive players….

KAM: Gary will wow the Moms of defensive recuits with his disco moves.
DAN: And win the recruits over talking about how great Welcome Back Kotter was.

Remember how “Barbara Ann” morphed around the time of the Iranian hostages? “Bomb-bomb-bomb, bomb-bomb Iran…”

Coach Patterson definitely has the resume to demand physical practices. And, get better coaching at all levels of the defense. This hire is something that all Trojan fans should be optimistic about. Fight on, Dan, Class of 1962

Stepping out of character…and being momentarily serious…. I agree, Ambitious. Patterson could lower our “points against” category by one whole T. D. per game. And that’s more than we need.

KAM: Or he could be over the hill.
DON: People his age usually retire from competitive golf.

I can understand any concern about Gary Patterson’s age and his motivation; however, as a Hall of Fame coach, I don’t believe that he would have taken this position if he didn’t feel that he could handle it. Turning USC into a playoff contender would be the frosting on his career cake. We shall see, but, also, maybe at my age, I am seeing a sixty something as young. And, like the saying goes, it isn’t work if you are having fun. If Gary Patterson enjoys coaching, he will do a great job for our school. And, I hope that LR does have a great relationship with him and respects him. Fight on, Dan, Class of 1962

This coming Monday pick up your copy of the ‘CA Post’ from any (that still exist) newsstand (7/11 for instance). Dylan Hernandez, formerly with the LAT spoke about the move this afternoon on 570 AM – the LAT is now what it always was – a sinkhole for progressive (communist) advocates led by the daily Pravda editor Michael Hilzik.
