USC Morning Buzz: Gary Patterson Is Going To Be Whirlwind

Gary Patterson was full of material yesterday confirming the stereotype that he is a football filmaholic.

“My wife watches Netflix, I watch film,” Patterson said.

The press conference was watched with amusement by a coach who used to work with Patterson and warned the current defensive staff.

“Gary will be a pain in the a–,” the coach said. “He will coach the whole defense. He and (defensive backs coach) Paul Gonzalez. The defensive line coach (Eric Henderson) will have his hands full.

“They’re not going to be able to tolerate Gary. Gary’s going to be hard to work with.”

Let’s see how long it is before some of the current defensive assistants apply for other jobs.

In the meantime, the former colleague of Patterson promises something else: The defense will get better.

      1. The DL was so inconsistent. They had some excellent games (Michigan) and some really awful games (Domers, Illinois).

Some guys love Henderson, including the hardest workers on the team (Jahkeem Stewart and Floyd Bouchard).

The LBs outside of the first half of the season for Gentry were subpar, so maybe the calls for the DL changed from game to game…

      2. Agree Oaktown. Keyshawn Silver and Devan Thompkins got pushed around by ND and Illinois. It was probably the biggest weakness on a weak defense. But I really like the future of that position group and Henny is the guy who brought in the thoroughbreds like Stewart, Bouchard, Winfield, and Wafle. Don’t want to see him leave because of a dispute with Patterson.

    1. KAM: The Department of Justice has joined the Students for Fair Admissions lawsuit against UCLA medical school—and it managed to get its hands on UCLA’s MCAT scores broken out by r a c e. In 2024, Hispanic matriculants only scored in 66th percentile and blacks 75th. Asians scored in the 90th and whites scored 86th.

DON: : The fact that black doctors don’t have to meet the same high standards as white and asian doctors is corrosive to our society. We should all want the very best doctors regardless of r a c e. We’ve got to stop putting lives at risk to advance the Democrat Party’s evil D E I agenda.

    2. That’s a better outcome than what Jesse Watters showed this evening 29th Jan 2026 @ 5:48 pm PST ‘Jane Fonda’ mouthing her ‘anti-ICE’ position with her ‘shadow’ lesbian (yeah identifies as such) egging her on but hey there never is anything from the left demoncrats except hell on earth.

    1. KAM: Cowardly Gabby’s fellow Preachy Democrat Giancarlo Esposito of “Breaking Bad” is openly talking about a violent revolution where potentially 50 million people die to bring about a “new world”… while speaking to the press at a glitzy film festival.

DON: Champagne socialism in a nutshell.

  3. I would hope that Patterson and Riley are out and about meeting high school coaches and players. Chesney at UCLA has been out meeting them and making a favorable impression. In 2002, I had the opportunity to work on an assignment with the head coach then at St. Bonaventure HS which was one of the premier high school football programs of those early 2000 years, and I asked him what he thought of Pete Carroll. Like Chesney, Pete enjoyed visiting with high school coaches, and the coach said that if USC sticks with Pete that he will be a very good coach. High school coaches know BS when they hear it. The coaches name is Jon Mack. Beware of the Bruins. Fight on, Dan, Class of 1962
