USC Morning Buzz: An Irony In Dallas

So Dawg Work did not get the Dallas Cowboys’ defensive line job.

Was it a surprise? Only to USC fans.

The irony here is that the Cowboys hired Marcus Dixon, who in 2021 was the assistant defensive line coach with the Rams working under . . . Eric Henderson.

The Cowboys brought both to Dallas for interviews and went with Dixon. Hmmm.

It’s got to be a blow for Henderson, who faces the prospect of working under new taskmaster Gary Patterson, who will have plenty to say to all the defensive assistants, which is good for the program but maybe not always good for the sanity of the assistants. I give most of the holdovers a season (or less) before they move on.

  1. You never know what goes on in an interview. The best coaches all share one thing in common, which is that the players will do anything for them. Henderson has that going for him on the D-line.

  2. hey wolfman, (chortle) it appears the SC gigs are not the springboard to success they once were. SC stock is dropping like Bitcoin, with a torturous road ahead in ’26 we are almost certainly looking at a shift in the landscape as in the 80’s when Bruins clobbered the trOXans 8 in a row!! i just wonder if the fragilé troXans can survive such a fall from the hopes of a CFP birth to the nether regions of the Big 10!!

    Even the boxer who is KO’d ultimately “rises”. The question is, how high?

    I remember when you were so optimistic about all the other gutty coaches, with Chip competing for a natty…sheesh.

    You really got to stop day drinking…or maybe increase it, whichever brings some lucidity.

    1. Charlie sees the tough schedule as a reason for USC to collapse. I see it as bringing focus to spring and fall practice.

      This schedule can make us as easily as it can break us.

Maybe Dixon brought film of the SC vs. ND game to the interview to enhance his chances. “This clip shows the ND left guard pushing the SC defensive lineman 3 yards opening a gaping hole that allowed for a 35 yard touchdown. I can tell you if I had been the SC coach there is no way ND runs for 300 yards against my line. “

  7. If you want to be the best, practice the best. Hasn’t the ongoing concern for USC been the soft practices. I can’t believe that Henderson doesn’t want tough practices unless he is just lazy, which I do not believe. If you don’t have a need to win mentality, you shouldn’t be coaching. By the way, who really cares about the Cowboys. Go Seahawks! Fight on, Dan, Class of 1962

    1. Kiffin started soft practices cuz our numbers were low & he couldn’t afford to lose players to injuries [also his Dad was NFL all the way & they don’t practice hard]. There is no reason to continue this approach —it hurts us more than it helps us. Toughen up, practice hard & play hard…

      1. Playing soft didn’t seem to cut down on injuries. How about teaching good warm up drills and good tackling and blocking technique. Footballl is a tough sport where injuries can occur. John McKay used to have all of his offensive linemen wear knee braces. Now, we see players with no knee pads and Bermuda shorts. Also, the shoulder pads for linemen used to be much wider than now. How about analyzing the role that equipment plays in injuries. Fight on, Dan, Class of 1962
