Texas athletic director Chris Del Conte has spoken at length on non-conference schedules and his desire for an expanded College Football Playoff.
“I prefer to preserve the regular season by playing great games and not dumbing down your schedule and playing nobody with the hopes that you can get in the playoff because you played nobody. If we can strengthen our regular season and keep that where our fans are engaged and want to see great games and have an expanded playoff, that’d be awesome.”
When have you heard anyone from USC speak with such clarity on this issue?
Del Conte also said he is not dropping games with Michigan and Ohio State to please Steve Sarkisian.
Has USC athletic director Jen Cohen stood up to Lincoln Riley on the schedule? Nope.
I think USC was clear – “we can no longer play ND in October or November because that is in the heart of our BIG schedule.” They wanted ND to agree to play them in the first few weeks of the season. That request seems reasonable but ND turned it down. ND wants to play a dumbed down schedule and get into the playoffs and so far that strategy is working.

KAM: What is reasonable about ending a 100 year tradition because Riley Coyote can’t compete?
DON: John Mckay, John Robinson and Pete Carroll never considered such cowardly behavior.

Until next year, the SEC played an eight game conference schedule. Starting in 2026 they will play nine conference games due to pressure from the Big 10 and the playoff committee for equal schedules in the power four conferences. And one of their non conference games is supposed to be a power four member. Two can still be FCS opponents.
Comparing today’s scheduling with schedules in the past is ludicrous. Of course our championship coaches wanted to play ND because we received votes in the polls which determined the national championship. It also paid USC to play ND at the middle or end of the season because that could sway the voters like it did in 1974. Since the BCS and playoffs, it is all about getting to the playoffs. The Big Ten is the only national conference with teams coast to coast. Far different than the SEC and Big 12 which are much more regional. The ACC does have Cal and Stanford, but they are just eye candy for academics.
By being in the Big 10, USC will always play one of the toughest schedules in the country despite not playing spoiled brat ND. By the way, when does Texas play ND or any other top school….it is usually at the beginning of the season where USC wanted to play them.

Gabby, You have the choice to stop participating in the board anytime you want. I have scaled back my posts alot because honestly, it is a waste of time to get too involved.
You seem to go back and forth between being nice and hostile and everything in-between. Maybe just chill out for a while and do something more productive/positive.

So you think USC should play Ohio State, Oregon, ND and UCLA to end the season. C’mon. Get real. Nobody plays a schedule like that. Certainly ND and the SEC teams adjust their schedules so they don’t play three tough games in a row. ND typically has a bye before the SC game and they rarely play more than three tough games in a season.

KAM: The USC I grew up with demanded excellence and didn’t blame the schedule when they didn’t measure up. In 1964 USC played then #2 Oklahoma, then #2 ranked Ohio State and #1 Notre Dame. John McKay didn’t make excuses. He went out and recruited players and brought in assistant coaches who wanted to play the best week after week, not head cases that wanted the easy way out.
DON: Amazing how fans defend the hired help who haven’t won anything in 4 years.

How did that kind of thinking work out for Texas? [Oh, that’s right —it left them saying “we shoulda been selected! What’s this all about?!]….

Bottom line is as Al Davis would say, just win baby. We haven’t even mentioned that some teams play in a conference championship game and some don’t. We have the SEC commissioner always preaching that losing in the conference championship game shouldn’t disqualify you. Crybaby ND never has to play in a conference championship game because you guessed it, they refuse to join a conference like all of the big boys. If they want to play big boy football, join the Big 10 and play USC every year for real and not for show. Fight on, Dan, Class of 1962

KAM: How did it work out for USC with an easy schedule with only 3 hard games?
DON: They lost all three hard games to Illinois, Notre Dame and Oregon and then lost their bowl game to a team without their starting QB. Maybe Riley Coyote should do the opposite?

Now that is funny, a SEC school saying they are not dumbing down schedule.
Evidently, he does not see UTSA or N Tx State on the Longhorns 2026 schedule.
Take a look at Longhorns 2025 opponents, Sam Houston St, UTEP and SJSU.
He is a moron.

It wasn’t intended ‘but’ note the ‘buttons’ Scott used:
IL, MI St. & Purdue all three of those are who ‘the princess’ plays this year and usually they face up against those mighty Wildcats from Evanston.
BTW that sarcastic ass jack ‘Petros Papadakis’ in today’s ‘Two Pros and a Cup of Joe’ at 5:00 am PST, mocked: USC and Pete Carroll. Yesterday on his ‘PMS Show’ (3:00 pm M-F) Papadakis was miffed when Lola Tatupu stated ‘the princess’ should join a conference.

Hi, ALv! How come you get to say Ass Jack and I don’t? [let’s see what happens here…maybe you’ve opened the doors for everyone]….
Love your comment …but…I can’t hate Petros after watching him score those madman touchdowns from the 2 yard line back in the day…head first with no thought of consequences….

Mike I still listen to his broadcasts with Matt Money Smith but his sucking up to Brady Quinn is telling. Petros is still adamant he did nothing wrong getting ‘%$#@’ canned from that sweet gig he had as the Galen Arena announcer 10 years ago – just prior to his getting the old ‘heave ho’ even Smith was cautioning him to tone it down.
It is still amazing those 4 buttons Scott chose to mock USC’s opponents are the very ones ‘sans Northwestern’ ‘the princess’ has scheduled for this year’s season.
