A quick word on the new Dedeaux Field.

When USC unveiled the original Dedeaux Field in 1974, it was considered one of the best college baseball stadiums in the country.

The new Dedeaux Field, which officially opened Friday night, by today’s standards is a basic ball park. Not remarkable. Not below par. Just a standard, bang-average facility with a small capacity (about 1,600 attended the opener).

It wouldn’t draw a second thought in the SEC. Maybe not even a first thought. In fact, it probably wouldn’t have drawn much attention in the old Pac-12.

It’s a ball park. And it beats driving to Irvine for home games. Or walking a mile from the parking lot to the stadium like at UCLA this year. That’s about it.

Obviously, amenities like the locker rooms and offices will be better today. What stadium wouldn’t be from 50 years ago? But it’s otherwise not memorable.

    1. KAM: Do the History and Anthropology Departments lose money too? USC’s rich baseball tradition deserves better.

      DON: Imagine if we had an AD who had the imagination to engage all the millionaire former players who played in the majors to support the program? Retire their numbers , have a special USC Baseball Hall of Fame, have nights in their honor? Nah, that would take effort from Jen “Taco Lita” Cohen.

    1. Exactly. Why should the school spend tens of millions of dollars more on a state of the art baseball field when baseball draws 1,500 fans at best and loses money. You invest in projects that return money. Only football has a return.

      1. Thanks Plow Horse for talking reality. Football has always made the money through donors and TV contracts to support the other sports in the program. Unfortunately, Seaver, Randy Johnson, Fred Lynn and other MLB baseball stars did not play today when baseballl stars can make millions. Dallas Long, Olympic shot put champion became an emergency room doctor because he couldn’t make money as a track athlete. Our athlete alums have contributed to Olympic sports when they made it financially. All it takes is one big megadonor to finance a sport. Look at who the sports facilities are named. Also, land for facilities is scarce around the USC campus. We are fortunate to have the facilities that we do have like the Galen Center, Marks Tennis Stadium, the new soccer field, the track facilities, etc. Fight on, Dan, Class of 1962

    2. KAM: Thanks to egghead President Steven B. Sample, who served from 1991 to 2010, USC significantly improved its academic stature by recruiting straight A non-athletic nerds who used to go to UCLA or Cal.

      DON; Now the average student doesn’t like sports and has no idea USC was ever great at baseball. Sadly USC student body has become UCLA.

      2. And Folt’s decision to invite five thousand students from Red China didn’t help camaraderie either. Frankly, an American student would likely have a more enriching experience at another school, probably outside of California.

    I went to Friday and Sunday’s game and I did not see you. Pitching on Friday was great and pitching and hitting were better on Sunday. On Saturday, SC threw a no hitter and they scored 11 runs by the seventh inning so they had the mercy rule kick in.

    I thought you might have mentioned how SC played and how the head coach for SC coached against his son who is an assistant coach for Pepperdine. You missed a good series.

    Scooter, the field is not done yet. But the biggest thing is, that the field is on SC property and it can’t be taken away like uglies field can. Remember that.
