USC Saturday Buzz: A Take On State Of The Program

Former USC linebacker Willie McGinest was recently on the All the Smoke podcast and this was one comment about the current state of the football program.

“We haven’t done what we are supposed to do. We fell short. He has delivered a Heisman Trophy winner in Caleb Williams. But as far as the standard for the school we have underchieved and we need to get back to where we need to be and hopefully it starts next year.”

  • USC’s assistant coaches met the media yesterday. Rob Ryan was not in attendance. Now it’s not surprise because USC announced Mike Ekeler and AJ Howard as linebacker coaches.

But . . . one would think USC might at least announce Ryan’s situation given the high profile he enjoys and the attention he got at press conferences last season.

  • Gary Patterson spoke again yesterday and listening to him, I’m sure I’m not the only one who thinks he sounds better than the head coach.

  1. I don’t believe Gary Patterson has any interest in being a head coach anywhere….it’s no different than being a: MD instead of a NP….a teacher instead of a substitute…a ‘Head of Department’ instead of a tenured professor…..a CEO instead of a Executive VP….in other words he has all the gain w.o. the concomitant head aches of ‘command’. He been there and done that

This will be a great year because it is expected to be and Riley knows 5 years is the max anyone can expect per the ‘buyout’ unless your Brian Kelly and LSU….
