USC Saturday Buzz: The Good And Bad Of This Weekend

A reader sent me this mock USC game ticket for the season-opener. How many of you will be happy going to see San Jose State (again) at the Coliseum.

  • USC basketball has a tough assignment today when 12th-ranked Nebraska visits the Galen Center at 1 p.m.

Eric Musselman seems to have lost some enthusiasm as the Trojans fade and today is a must victory to get back into the NCAA Tournament projections. I can’t really say the Trojans are playing with a sense of urgency, either, despite their current predicament as the one of the first four teams out of the NCAA Tournament.

But with a victory the Trojans could grab some of their mojo back, which is vital as games with Washington and UCLA loom next week.

  • USC pitchers had a no-hitter going into the 11th inning last night and finished with an 11-inning one hitter in a 6-0 victory over Cal Poly San Luis Obispo.

USC starting pitchers Mason Edwards and Grant Govel this season have pitched 30 innings and allowed zero earned runs, two hits and struck out 52.

  • The USC women’s tennis team is ranked No. 8 nationally but has a 7-4 record. And yesterday, it lost to No. 5 UCLA, 6-1.

  2. I pick up my best friend from the hospital today. I’ve seen lots of dying patients in Intensive Care over the last three weeks [I always lie to them and tell them they look great and seem to be improving]….

    2. Michael, I hope your friend recovers. After my dad fell into a coma following a botched surgery and was in intensive care for several weeks, my impression is that hospitals are a place for older people to die and the hospitals are fine with that impression. The doctors and care staff are on automatic pilot with their treatment plans and only give a nominal effort toward the person’s care once people reach a certain age. Rarely do they make adjustments if the care plan is not working. They just let them die. A doctor friend of mine said they actually have a name for these types of elderly patients – GOMER (Get Out of my Emergency Room). They hate to absorb the excess cost of treating elderly patients on Medicare.

      1. Just got back. Thanks so much for the kind thoughts! [You couldn’t be more right about the ‘care level’ one sees at the hospital —it is nearly non-existent —-with ‘physician assistants’ constantly telling patients they’ll be right back, only to disappear].

        Sorry about you Dad, Plow. What I’ve seen over the last 3 weeks is a real eye opener. I’ve decided I’m dying at home if I have anything to say about it.

      All joking aside, hope he either get better soon or goes as peacefully as possible, at home with loved ones. Much better than in a hospital!

      1. Man, are you correct! It’ll take me a while to forget how little compassion was shown to patients who were obviously ‘on their way out.’

        I guess it’s up to us to make peace with whatever we find sacred —-cuz—- we’re not gonna get much sympathy from the hospital staff…..

  3. Seems odd that our team can give up zero runs for 11 innings and win 6-0. We must have score 6 in the top of the 11th. Not may extra inning games end 6 to 0. Not many 1 hit games go into extra innings.

    1. KAM: How exhausting it must be to be a liberal like Cowardly Gabby today. For decades they were defined by standing up to authoritarianism and championing the oppressed. But now, in the face of one of the greatest liberations in modern history, they can’t allow themselves to celebrate because they spent the last decade consuming buffets of b s about the guy who just made it happen.
