USC Morning Buzz: Time For A Spring Practice Observation

Did you know that during a reception with alumni on Friday night, USC president Beong-Soo Kim referred to Jen Cohen as the “best athletic director in the country.”

  • Here is an observation about USC spring practice that I’ve heard from people within the football program: New defensive coordinator Gary Patterson is extremely hands-on.

It is not unusual for him to coach up every position on the defense at practices, not just the secondary, which is his specialty.

This bodes well overall for the defense but as I’ve alluded since he got hired, will probably drive some of the defensive staff crazy. Oh well. If it makes the defense better that’s all that matters.

No one can match Patterson’s drive because he basically has no life outside of coaching 24/7.

  • USC plays Washington on Wednesday at 11:30 a.m. PT in the Big Ten Tournament. The game is going to be on Peacock.

Has a team ever declined a bid to its conference tournament? USC should consider it.

  1. Yes, USC should pass on playing in the tournament. But with the game being on Peacxck, that’s practically the same thing.

Pretty ridiculous that the name of a network doesn’t get past the moderators!

    1. So Cal,

Would you really wanna be part of a blog that allowed the word “PeaC0ck”?

      “Heaven and Earth, Forbid it!”

  2. Patterson is a bit like Harbaugh. He is a mad dog. The benefit is that the defense should improve immediately. The negative is that he can wear thin on people in a short amount of time. Then again, winning pretty much takes precedence over everything, so fingers crossed Riley stays in his lane and leaves Patterson alone.

    1. If USC beats Oregon at the coliseum we won’t hear a word of complaint from anyone on Patterson’s interventionistic coaching style…

      1. I am hoping that all those years of over-pursuit, missed tackles, missed assignments, playing off 4.8 WRs by 10 yards, etc. will be a thing of the past.

The DL should be much better, and will def be much bigger.

BTW, am I the only guy that is being required to sign in for every time I write?

      2. Answer: For me, the “perpetual sign in” thing comes in waves every few months— [Personal Note: each time I have to sign in I find myself whispering “how phiucked up is this?”]……

    2. Good thing that Henny is gone. Can you image being a former NFL player and coach and having Patterson, someone who never played the position, correct your players on DL technique. Coaches have big egos. That is not going to fly.

      1. Coach Patterson to assistants: “It WILL fly…and you’re gonna like it!”

  3. USC had a full pad scrimmage on Saturday morning in the Coli. Parents and former players were invited but not the press or public. It would be nice to know who stood out. Heard that Trent Mosley had a great day. How about Rock Hill and Luke Wafle. Parents and former players usually talk even when they promise not to do it.

    1. KAM: Search Assist

Gary Patterson has faced allegations regarding player health and safety, particularly a 2018 lawsuit from former TCU star WR Kolby Listenbee, which claims he was pressured to play through injuries. He was joined in his lawsuit by other TCU athletes — David Johnson, Cameron White, Lonta Hobbs, Ed Wesley, and Stansly Maponga — who claimed to have similar experiences.

Kolby Listenbee raised concerns about being pressured to play through a serious pelvic injury, which he claims required a minimum of six months of rest and rehabilitation. He alleges that the coaching staff administered painkillers and steroids to enable him to play, ultimately leading to severe damage that required surgical intervention and ended his NFL career prospects. The lawsuit was settled in 2019 .

  4. Scooter,

I went to the sc men’s basketball game on saturday and sc baseball yesterday. the basketball team got their asses handed to them. However, the baseball team was down 2-0 at the bottom of the first and came back and won 5-3. They are 15-0. They play long beach state on tuesday for a record of 16-0, which would be the best ever for SC.
