Morning Buzz: USC Pro Day Features Anticipated Workouts

USC holds its Pro Day today. Makai Lemon is expected to run the 40-yard dash, which he did not do at the NFL combine.

Eric Gentry will participate in drills, which he did not do at the NFL combine.

  • USC improved to 17-0 after a 7-6 victory over the University of San Diego in 10 innings last night. The longest winning streak in USC baseball history is 19 games.
  • I hear USC men’s basketball assistant coach Earl Boykins is a candidate for the Eastern Michigan job.

  1. Great video of Del Rio! I don’t recall him playing baseball…342 average!

    Two sports guy, those were the days. Now, if a kid has talent, ALL the kid does is one sport, and specializes in one area, such as baseball pitching.

    Gone are the days of football in the fall, hoops in the winter, baseball in the spring.

    Today is the day of hiring a 32-year old with 4 kids from the Dominican Republic to play basketball for one year for 6 figures or more.

    1. I don’t think sports specialization is a good idea for most kids. Sam Darnold was a starting point guard in High School. You can see his basketball skills when he is pressured and seems to effortlessly step up and find an open receiver on the run just like a point guard feeding the ball on a fast break. Some of USC’s best football players were multi sport letterman – Anthony Munoz, Fred Lynn, Ronnie Lott, Anthony Davis, Don Buford, Ernie Zampese, Drake London, ect. Part of the problem today is that football coaches now expect the incoming players to graduate early and play Spring ball and even discourage the returning players from playing other sports including baseball and track.

  2. yaaaaaawn…let’s face it wofman, despite your stellar reportage, nothing going on of much import. why don’t you just cover Bruin sports for a while, as you know we are on the cusp of March Madness, and the trOXans are already knocked out of the action!! meanwhile the Bruin men are just starting to roll on the Big 10 tourney and the women are looking a number 1 seed in the Women’s tourney!!!! many consider March Madness the most exciting time of the year, wolfman! it doesn’t seem fair for the top beat writer in the nation to have to take a knee!! i have a call into Chancellor Young, wolfman, you’ll find your Bruin credentials at the will call.
