USC Buzz: It’s Selection Sunday (For One Team)

It’s Selection Sunday, otherwise known as a day off for Eric Musselman and his players.

But the women’s basketball team will wait to see where they get sent. Guard Jazzy Davidson, who gothurt in the Big Ten Tournament, is OK and able to play. Will USC be able to win two games in the tournament? One game might be a tough ask depending on the draw.

  • USC won 19 straight games to start the season. The only other USC baseball team to win 19 straight games was in 1955, which went to the College World Series.

That team featured several All-Americans: outfielder Gerry Mason, catcher John Garten and pitcher Vic Lapiner.

Another player who spent a short period on that team before signing a pro contract was pitcher Barry Latman, who was a member of the Chicago White Sox team that won the 1959 World Series and a member of the American League All-Star team in 1961.

Fairfax High School had three players in the 1959 World Series: Larry Sherry and Chuck Essegian (Dodgers) and Latman (White Sox).

      1. Native Americans played something similar to stick ball. But we stole that the way we stole their land and merely renamed it baseball.

  1. Three players from the same high school playing in the same world series. That has got to be some kind of record. Most high schools can go thirty years or more without a single player making the major leagues let alone 3 at the same time.

  2. Thank you RFK for correcting our esteemed professional journalist regarding the 1959 world series champions the Los Angeles Dodgers who won it in sixs games with Larry Sherry getting two wins and two saves as the closer and named MVP of the series. By the way his brother Norm Sherry was on that team as a backup catcher who is credited with helping his brother and Sandy Koufax were both coached by him to perfect their deliveries. Making the playoffs this year without Juju is a real tribute to the USC womens basketball team and their coach. If they go deep that would be fantastic, but just making it is an accomplishment that Muss would relish if his team had been motivated to play hard to the end of games. Fight on, Dan, Class of 1962
