USC Monday Buzz: The Hype Reached A New High (Or Low)

Can you believe spring practice is already halfway over with seven of the 15 practices used up?

The number of experts talking about spring practice is breathtaking. They can discern even small details even though Lincoln Riley only allows less than 30 minutes of practice viewing: the meaningless part where stretching and individual drills take place (of course).

That doesn’t stop pundits from making bold pronouncements. Or awful takes from fans. One twitter account proclaimed last week that either incoming freshmen tight end Mark Bowman and quarterback Jonas Williams “will win a Heisman by the time they’re done with USC.”

So much for not placing unrealistic expectations on freshmen. But that’s all some people are capable of these days. Foolishness.

It would be great to see Gary Patterson react to a comment like that. He’s a real coach. Not a fanboy.

  • As expected, USC declined to participate in the NIT. USC has actually spurned the NIT two of the past three seasons.

  1. “Gary Patterson is a real coach.”

That’s about as rah rah as Scott gets. We should all be excited for a dominate performance by the USC defense.

  2. Best to wait until 2027 before admitting SC into the College Football Playoffs. ‘Vegas probably has it right in setting the bar at 8.5 wins– the Trojans have a tough shedule and they usually lose one game they should win

The qustion is what to do with Wiley. SC will probably bring him back for a 6th season in 2027, but then it will definitely be ‘Make the Playoffs, or head back to wherever you came from’

  3. Scott, predicting a negative outcome is a psychological defense mechanism for someone who has a hard time accepting reality. What would make Muss think that his team would be invited to the NIT. We need a coach who is not afraid to face reality. Get a young, proven coach at whatever level and let that coach develop a team with character Hint: Bennett from St. Mary’s.

  4. I’ve never seen a USC hoops or football team collapse as bad as MBB did this season. I may have misjudged the quality of the Muss hire. Getting Bennett seems like such a no brainer.

  5. The Lakers are learning that you can’t just put a bunch of stars, especially aging stars, on the floor and call them a team. It still takes coaching like having plays where everyone plays a role and playing with intensity for 48 minutes which requires motivation and knowing when to substitute and call time outs to keep up the energy level. The Lakers coach appears to know the needs, but is inexperienced. Muss probably knows the needs, but is too stubborn to change and grow with the team because he doesn’t keep players long enough to really coach them. Fight on, Dan, Class of 1962
