USC Tuesday Buzz: A Viral Spotlight On Recruiting

There’s been attention on Matt Leinart saying he turned down USC’s request to let recruits wear his retired No. 11.

The whole issue illustrates what a farce it was to let Jordan Addison wear No. 3 for his one semester at USC.

I don’t blame Carson Palmer for that. I blame Lincoln Riley and his staff for pestering Palmer to let Addison wear No. 3.

Let’s remember this is the same school that let players regularly wear retired numbers in basketball worn by Bill Sharman, Gus Williams and Harold Miner. There’s no respect for the past when it comes to modern-day coaches and staff. If you don’t believe me read this.

  • Five-star forward Christian Collins of St. John Bosco is going to announce his college choice Wednesday at 12 p.m. He is expected to commit to USC
  • Eastern Michigan has hired Clemson assistant Billy Donlon. USC assistant coach Earl Boykins was a candidate for the job.
  • USC women’s basketball is a 7-point favorite over Clemson according to BetOnline.

  1. I have seen this kid Christian Collins play– tall, lean, and lanky.

This kid reminds me of a young Sydney Wicks when he was in school at Hamilton High School where he dominated but was still a bit raw, and needed a Coach like John Wooden to teach him the fundamentals of the game. Wicks, like Collins is a bit raw on the offensive end, but dominant on the glass, and will surely develop his offensive game like Wicks did in college. After a few years in the NBA, for some reason Sydney Wicks career mysteriously went down hill quickly. I will never forget the blocked shot he executed on Jacksonville’s 7’2 Center Artis Gilmore in the NCAA Tournament

Collins upside is tremendous I just hope that if he comes to USC he will develop his skills playing under Bill Musselman who I believe is not a very good basketball coach. or teacher. Does he have connections with the NBA sure, but what we need with 3 freshman next year is someone who can develop players quickly like Duke does year in and year out. Watching Elijah Arenas this season it was clearly evident the raw skills are there, but he needs a strong coach to team him the fundamentals of basketball

Two coaches to consider who are true teachers of the game of basketball- Chris Collins- Northwestern, and St. Mary’s Randy Bennett who really develops low profile recruits, and gets many of them to the NBA.

    1. I recall Wicks dealing with painful knees that I believe ultimately forced him out of the NBA by the late 1970s. He was a force in the first few years for the Trailblazers.

  2. I always thought 11 was a lousy athletic number. My kid had jersey numbers 9 and 11 to choose from on his baseball team and I convinced him to choose 9. Why? He was a lefty and the 9 belonged to Ted Williams and Roy Hobbs of The Natural. The equipment manager in The Natural told Roy that only 9 and 11 were left and to take 9 because 11 was unlucky.
