USC Thursday Buzz: Do Splash Hires Work?

If you’re wondering why Cal State L.A. is supposed to hire Michael Cooper as its men’s basketball coach despite Cooper’s spotty track record, remember the athletic director at Cal State L.A. is Daryl Gross, who for many years was Mike Garrett’s No. 2 at USC.

Garrett (and Gross) used to believe in trying to make a splash hire in basketball. Once they offered the USC men’s job to Kareem Abdul-Jabbar. Cooper was not a great fit at USC, so it will be interesting to see what happens at Cal State L.A.

  • Chris Capko, a long-time USC assistant under Andy Enfield, is expected to become the coach at Ball State.

,Speaking of Enfield, he had a quick handshake after losing in the NCAA Tournament last night.

  • Jack Basseer had a two-run homer to give USC a walk-off 4-3 victory over Cal State Bakersfield last night. The Trojans are 21-1 and 15-0 at Dedeaux Field.

    1. KAM: Too bad they haven’t played anyone ranked.

DON: After what happened to the football and basketball teams with the easy early schedule I am afraid this is more Fools Gold.

      1. KAM: I hope so.

DON: After what I heard yesterday it seems there is a concerted effort to avoid mid major teams that might give our basketball and baseball teams a test.

  1. wolfman, it’s a well known fact you over all info related to SC, and you did mention Enfield’s loss in the Tourney, but you seem to be glossing over the fact the NCAA is apparently investigating Enfield for giving false info concerning player injury prior to selection process. is this a cover up job, wolfman? you never miss tasty scooops like this!! it appears you can take the coach out of SC, but you can’t take the SC out of the coach

  2. Scott, are you really concerned about who gets hired to coach basketball at Cal State L.A.? Explain when and what you know about Kareem Abdul Jabar being considered for the USC head coaching position. How about keeping your minions informed about all of our spring sports? We are competing in the swimming and diving championships, the women’s golf team will probably be ranked first in the country after their third consecutive tournament win, beach volleyball and men’s volleyball are both playing at a high level as are tennis and men’s golf, and our track and field team is in the running for a second straight NCAA outdoor title. And, of course our baseball team is fantastic this year. Fight on, Dan, Class of 1962

    1. Didn’t know these other minor sports were doing so well. Thanks Dan. But the Kareem story was a good one. Glad Wolfie shared it with us.
