USC Saturday Buzz: Great Offense Or Shoddy Defense?

USC placed this on social media to highlight its explosive offense. But the flip side is what did Gary Patterson think of this play? Did he watch it 100 times and find things he didn’t like with his defense?

  • USC baseball defeated Washington, 5-0, last night. Pitcher Mason Edwards threw six shut out innings. He has pitched 36 innings this season and allowed seven hits, one earned run and struck out 64 with a 0.25 ERA.

    1. Ha! “The missed tackles and mistakes came at the worst possible time.”

—Riley after Tulane, Notre Dame & TCU games…

Yeah, hundred yard T. D.’s usually come at a bad time, coach….

      1. Big win for the women against Clemson in South Carolina. They may not beat the top seed the USC of the South. But, one win against a higher seed is an accomplishment and bodes well for next year with Juju and the outstanding incoming freshmen. And, I don’t think that Coach Linda yells at her assistants. P.S. Football fan appreciation day is April 11 with baseball and lacross free to the public…..Maybe Scott will attend the festivities and the games.

  1. When is Scott going to mention Fan Appreciation Day and advertise it so that Trojan fans can meet the team like he had suggested. Fight on, Dan, Class of 1962

      1. KAM: Riley Coyote doesn’t appreciate the great unwashed “fans”.

DON: To him they are loathsome toadies he uses when convenient. He makes Terry Donahue look like an extrovert.

    1. How did we used to win games? Pound the ball down the field in 6-7 minute drives. As Pete put it, “keep going straight at ’em until they don’t want it anymore.”

Our running game is gonna completely change the way USC plays football this season. And —all joking aside — Riley seems to have put together a Big Ten Champion.

    1. Not based on that video. I vote shoddy defense over great offense. Too many defenders had a shot to tackle Miller and didn’t get it done.

      1. There’s gotta be some reason why Riley’s guys don’t put out on defense ……

      2. MG. Our guys just don’t tackle well. The only sure tackler was maybe Kamari Ramsey but he took a step back last year. Why? My theory is that these elite defensive backs are too specialized. They look at themselves as elite coverage guys more than players who come into the box and finish off ball carriers. Kind of like Deion Sanders. And the elite programs such as Mater Dei, John Bosco, ect. seem to foster this specialization mentality. Do any of the elite safeties in these programs average 8 to 10 tackles a game? I bet Ronnie Lott had 10 tackles a game in high school. So did Matt Grootegoed and he played both ways.

      3. I’m good! Thank you for asking, my dear Bud!

There is a basin between us and the golf course. It’s as full as can be —but we’re fine!

Oh, and Sybil, we never lost power in our development….

      4. fellas, help me out. Watching the video, I see Maiava flushed out of the pocket, which suggests a good pass rush or a play that has broken down because of good coverage. I see King get a good block early in the run, then King gets past one defender on an open field tackle opportunity, I can’t tell how close the defender is.

Anyway, take another look and tell me at what point of the video I should focus on.

  2. I forgot, who hired Coach Andy to lead our fantastic baseball team? Who hired Coach Watts to lead our national championship track team, and who hired Coach Nygaard who is leading our men’s volleyball team back to prominence. Was it by any chance Jen Cohen who had nothing to do with LR’s ten year, no opt out contract? Who just established Fan Appreciation Day on April 11. I wish that Scott would give credit where credit is due. By the way, didn’t she hire the football general manager who just gave us the top ranked recruiting class? MG, thanks for telling it like it is. Fight on, Dan, Class of 1962.

    1. We’ve been here for over a decade, John — and we’ve never seen anything like it. As a matter of fact, Kihei usually gets zero rain.
