USC Sunday Buzz: No Madness In March Here

Arkansas, where Eric Musselman used to coach, is in the Sweet 16. So is Nebraska.

How about this? Utah State, who plays today, spent $2.4 million on NIL. USC spent about $8 million on three players. And could not make the tournament.

Then there is the $5 million-plus Musselman makes in salary.

Needless to say, the money’s not been well spent recently for USC basketball. Miami and Texas Tech made the College Football Playoff and NCAA Tournament. So should USC.

      1. Ruso,

I was at the game on Sunday. SC won on the mercy rule. The game was won 14-4 in the bottom of the 7th. I am ditching work to go see Oregon St play on , Tuesday. They will have $2.00 tacos. If SC beats Oregon St. then SC is legit. Oregon lost to Northwestern yesterrday. They have two conference losses.

  1. I’m sure St.Mary’s, Santa Clara and Cal Baptist also spent less and made the playoffs. Also how did “Dominic Daniels” of Cal Baptist not get an offer from the Trojans? I saw him play last year with the Lancer’s and I thought he was great! A definite hidden gem. A local kid also.

  3. Musselman is obviously overpaid— shows you how stupid how AD is. You think Muss man paid alot last year for players he will con his way to pay players even more this year because he knows it’s win next year, or sell his luxury home in Manhattan beach. Don’t forget we are also paying his son who is an assistant coach a nice salary also.

The difference between the NBA D League is coaching is not necessary like it is in college basketball. I must admit Mick Cronin can coach and motivate will he last much longer at UCLA due to the high expectations that is doubtful. Musselman is not even close to Cronin in terms of coaching ability but both are jerks with a small man complex. Cronin, looks so funny watching him in games wearing his custom tailored midget sized suits I guess he feels the salary he is making means he must have the GQ look which isn’t his correct look by any means.

I really think USC should go with a lower paid coach someone from a smaller school who really knows how to win with less. Right now, the attendance and interest in men’s basketball is at an all time low so USC is better off starting over.

    1. UCLA press liaison:: Our team took a vote and issued the following statement: “If we don’t have all our scorers on the court we won’t even try. It’s part of our bruin culture. People who say we’re ‘on fire’ just don’t understand who we are”…..

      1. Mick – what’s the deal with getting tossed?

KAM: He was upset over the officiating.

DON: He was beating the traffic.

  4. Scott, now this is good reporting. And, I agree that Muss needs to win big next year with his incoming recruits or leave the program for someone else. How is his contract structured for a buyout? Fight on, Dan, Class of 1962

  5. Musselman’s contract- “states” Spend as much money as you like during the term of this USC employment contract, and if USC decides to terminate the contract before the expiration we will pay your entire family 75 million dollars regardless of your job performance.

Other than Petino, and Calipari no coach in college athletics should have huge buy out contacts. Like any employee a college basktball coach should have to perform within the first 3 years, and on short term contracts not long term with buy out options.

    1. Funny take on Musselman’s contract —but you shoulda gone ALL the way: “Head Coach guaranteed 13 million in event of winning record, 45 million in event of losing record….and assurance of at least 5 more seasons —like all the other USC coaches get”…
