USC Notes: Lincoln Riley Encouraged By Some Spring Positions

Lincoln Riley said at the end of spring practice that he feels better about the wide receiver, tight end and linebacker positions.

Wide receiver and tight end? I mean, USC is always good at wide receiver. Why would he ever be concerned.. Tight end? USC pays Mark Bowman $1.5 million. Enough said.

Now linebacker is the interesting one. Because I’ve noted it as a sore spot and even after spring practice I’ve heard there are concerns within the program about it. So I wouldn’t listen to Riley, who doesn’t know defense, on this topic.

  • It took USC baseball 33 games before finally having a contest televised on the Big Ten Network? And if you watched Sunday, the announcer said John Savage led USC to their only NCAA title in 2013. He meant UCLA, obviously.
  • The Masters golf tournament starts this week. So let’s keep our eyes out to see if Augusta members Lynn Swann and Pat Haden actually show up to the tournament.

  2. Last year’s interior defensive line was weak. ND and Illinois were knocking them off the line of scrimmage. That affected the linebackers who did not have the proper angles to make a play. I think this year will be better. I like the DL transfer from Michigan State. He doesn’t get knocked backward. I think Tom Tom and Winfield will also be really good players although it may take them a year or two. Both Stephens and Walker are athletic linebackers. Coach Ekelar said that Stevie Wonder could see the talent in his position group. Let’s hold him to that. Patterson seems to like the linebackers too. I am optimistic that our defensive will take a step up this coming year. Really like the recruiting class and coaching changes.

      1. KAM: Imagine the optimism of Trojan Fans for the coming season if we had actually beaten crummy TCU 4 months ago in the Alamo Bowl instead of laying this stinker:https://www.youtube.com/shorts/HXnEpq30RY8

DON: And losing our 5 star vaunted back up Husan Longstreet to the portal so web have zero QB dept if Jayden goes down….

      2. Don’t undervalue Sam Huard. He has the highest completion percentage of any USC quarterback.

      3. KAM: That’s right, a 100% completion average. He ‘s a good NCAA Division I Football Championship Subdivision (FCS) (formerly known as Division I-AA) quarterback.

DON: But a second string backup for the great USC Trojans? Please!

      4. Jonas Williams will probably be the backup Gabby. But if Jonas is hurt or flounders we have former 5 star Sam Huard. I like Huard. With the transfer portal, it is hard to find a talented third stringer and Sam is athletic with a strong arm. Some guys need more time to develop. I think Sam is one of those guys. We are lucky to have him.

      5. KAM: Huard is listed right now as the second string QB in the projected depth chart.

KAM: For some reason Washington and Utah refused to play him at quarterback at all.

    1. Hard to prove it without watching a game. Or observing practices or a Spring game. I guess we will have to rely on the experts who did observe the linebackers in practice until the season starts.

      1. KAM: The experts who 5 years ago predicted multiple conference titles and National Championships under Riley Coyote?

        DON: Oh yeah, those experts.

      1. “Bless her heart.”

She could try to enroll at UCLA to see if it did for her mental health what it did for Lauren Betts. But I’m pretty certain they would never have her.

What she really needs to do is hop on a plane to Iran right now, doing her very best to get there by 5 pm.

    1. Wow! I didn’t see this coming! USC has been on such an awesome course up till now… Law Center: Total Marxist Farce; Development Contracts: Closely scrutinized to assure no cost overruns; Public Statements: “We applaud the rioters for traveling The Road of Righteousness!”…..
