I thought this would be a weekend free of USC losing to UCLA. I was wrong.
USC’s beach volleyball team met UCLA in a tournament yesterday at San Luis Obispo. The Bruins won, 3-2.
- Anyone see Lincoln Riley?

thanks for the sweeeeet scoop, wolfman!! UCLA beating Southern Cal feels inevitable these days!!! here’s another scoop, compliments of Chucker-Bucker, wolfman: UCLA baseball on a 26 game winning streak!! remember a few days ago when the Dummies were reveling in SC’s shiny record, despite the fact me and you pointed out it was more likely the result of SC’s usual cupcake scheduling?? that is until SC got clubbed like a baby seal by the juggernaut Bruin squad!!

Time to celebrate. The new President of Hungary is going to open the borders to the Muslim hordes like the rest of Europe. Look what they have done to France, Germany, and England. Don’t work, don’t pay taxes, consume the majority of the state welfare programs, don’ assimilate into western culture, establish ghettos with “no go” zones, build mosques on every other corner, take over the public streets 5 times a day for the call to Muslim prayer, rape western women, and dream of the day they will have enough political power to establish Sharia law and kick out the infidels.

Scott, enough with the snarky comments about LR. Were you at the family day at USC so that you can report to your fans? And, did you attempt to interview Jen Cohen about any of your expressed concerns regarding the athletic program and football and men’s basketball in particular? Isn’t that what a good journalist and USC super fan would do. Is the baseball team sweeping Iowa? Fight on, Dan, Class of 1962

Frankly Dan, fan appreciation day is a joke. If SC appreciated its fan base, they would open football practices and have a Spring game. I am really interested in the new recruits but it is difficult to get excited about the program because Riley won’t allow reporters to observe practices and report to the fans. Are you alright with this because I am not.

Riley’s approach reminds me of Tommy Prothro’s: You don’t have to please the fans, you don’t have to win popularity contests, you don’t even have to win all your games —- you just need to win enough of the games that matter to stay in the race for the championship.

In past years when spring games were held, the games were sparsely attended. Who are these thousands of USC fans clamoring for a free spring game. I do agree that there should be scrimmage transparency for reporting purposes, but as a fan I can wait for the real games, especially now that we are in a super conference and playing one of the toughest schedules in the country. The Fan Appreciation Day was thoughtful for those fans, especially with young children, who want to meet players. I still believe that journalists like Scott have a role to play by interviewing coaches and athletic administrators which could be scheduled concurrently with the Fun Day activities. ‘Old Dobbin’, I do believe that will change if he has a great year i.e deep into the playoffs. Anything seen this Spring by the 4th estate (uh a certain webmaster host here) would be more than dissected – Riley has this year and he knows it. I am confidently hopeful we’re on the verge of something akin of what was here 20 years ago.

Tommy Prothro was known for his engaging press conferences, where he often discussed game strategies, player performances, and team dynamics. He served as the head coach for UCLA and the Los Angeles Rams, providing insights into his coaching philosophy and the challenges of leading a football team. Prothro’s ability to communicate effectively with the media was a key aspect of his coaching career.
DON: Riley Coyote is no Tommy Prothro, who actually won a Pac 8 conference championship.

All good points, Gabby — Yes, Tommy was a Southern Charmer. He also said “there are some games I ‘star’ when I see the schedule each season….they’re the ones we have to win, the rest are the ones we can afford to lose.” To my mind, Tommy was the first football coach ever to imply he was willing to rest the troops in certain games —cuz he could win a championship without winning those games. I think Lincoln felt the best way to get to the playoffs was to boot Notre Dame from the schedule.
[Henry Ford said “I can do 12 months work in 9 months…but not in 12 months.” In other words, work your butt off in a focused way. Let’s see if it works for Coach Riley]…

Right. Your arguments are so ridiculous that there is no sense in responding to them, which most of the time no one does

In fact it was downright embarrassing to see the lack of attendance at past spring scrimmages when contrasted with the sold out stadiums in the SEC and elsewhere. Those photos hurt our recruiting and certainly didn’t help it. I do think that it is a big mistake for USC recruiting to not hold open practices like Uncle Pete used to do for reporters and former players and celebrities. LR should be judged on his coaching ability and not his public relations ability. Woody Hayes was an SOB but he won until he tackled the Clemson player running down the sideline in the bowl game. Great sweep weekend for Coach Andy and his terrific baseball team. By the way does Coach Andy allow fans and reporters at his practices? What about the basketball and water polo coaches? I would SO love to see Lincoln tackle Dante Moore on the sidelines… injuring him just enough so he couldn’t finish that one game…. sacrificing his career to get us to the playoffs…

Didn’t Frank Kush at ASU grab his players by the face mask to get their attention. Oh, the good old days of coaches abusing players and not having any rights but involuntary servitude once they signed their letter of intent. MG, always great to hear your comments. Fight on, Dan, Class of 1962

So did Bobby Knight. His antics were embarrassing at times but he played by the rules and most of his players graduated. He would promise the parents that their kids would go to class and he would do everything in his power to ensure that they studied hard and earned a degree.

MG, Woody was the three yards and a cloud of dust kind of coach. Was the antithesis of LR by not liking the forward pass because it couldn’t guarantee forward progress. When the Big Ten was routinely beating the PCC, it was because the sunshine boys had thin blood. When USC started winning the Rose Bowl routinely, it was because of our warm weather and thin blood.
