USC Morning Buzz: Gary Patterson Has One Weak Spot

Gary Patterson loves to watch and talk football 24 hours a day.

But here’s something people out here don’t really know about the football savant. If you want to make him happy and get him to forget about football, just take him to a country-western bar or club. It won’t take much to get him to start singing and if you toss him a guitar, even better.

I’m sure someone at USC will look for a country-western bar in the South Bay at some point.

  • Now back to football. Patterson said yesterday he was able to teach about 75 percent of what he wants the defense to do during spring practice.

He said “the linebackers can really run and we’re big up front.”

He also said he understands what it means to be at USC.

“I understand you want to live up to all those expectations,” Patterson said.

One other thing: He said every defensive coach had to go up the dry erase board to draw up and explain schemes. I bet some guys got exposed during those sessions.

  1. Scott, thanks for the insights about Coach Patterson. Did you interview him regarding his personal interests and work analysis? What is the weak spot referred to in your headline? As a former teacher, it sounds to me that he is an excellent teacher by involving his position coaches in defense instruction. This was good reporting whether first or second hand. 1. I taught Evidence for a while. Nothing put more pressure on a student than sending them to the board in front of the class. Most teachers don’t do it cuz it can be such a source of embarrassment…. but it’s also a grand way of keeping everybody on their toes.

[I once asked a student to write all the California hearsay exceptions on the board. She said “they’re already on a chart in our evidence textbook.” For some reason her answer brought back an unwanted memory of dialog from the 1933 version of King Kong —which I’ve probably seen around 300 times—and I said “you won’t find it on any chart… it’s on a piece of paper given to me by the skipper of a Norwegian bark.” All these youngsters —who had never seen a non-color film in their lives —just looked at me].

      1. When our daughter was at Officer’s Training School for the Army, they had to go in front of the class and come up with an attack plan using artillery, tanks, infantry etc. She said it didn’t go well for anyone. They were given a week to prepare a plan and she said they all passed, lol.

  2. Do they have country western bars in the South Bay? Last time I remember going to one had to be the Palomino Club in North Hollywood. Saw The New Riders of the Purple Sage. Great show. I think over 40 years ago.

      1. Jerry Garcia, Phil Lesh ( sporadically ) & Mickey Hart were part of the early lineup, Robert Hunter auditioned on bass before they finally went with Dave Torbert, Garcia would play with NRPS until 1971.

      7. She is rather sad & pathetic. We can all see why she feels the need to come here, where she’s not wanted. No one wants her around them in the real world either.

Only a child would seek attention in the manner she does.

  3. Patterson’s defenses led the nation in total defense five times between 2000 and 2010. Fingers crossed he can bring the magic back. He does seem to have the personality needed to stir the pot (in a good way).

      1. That is interesting. In principle, Patterson’s 4-2-5 is supposed to be able to confuse RPO because the QB typically reads a LB; if the LB comes towards the LOS, it is throw, if the LB backs up into coverage, it is run. Patterson’s defense is set up so the pre-snap coverage changes and the defender to be “read” may be a safety and not the LB, which results in the QB making the wrong read.

I am guessing that his 4-2-5, with coverages changing after the snap, takes a lot of practice to get right…hopefully it won’t take the whole season to get right…

      2. He had a couple of good years in 2014,15 & 17 but his teams fell off the map after 2017, 21-22 which is almost as “good” as Riley has been after year one ( 24-15 ) !!!

How many games until Patterson does a Pola on Riley’s face ?

      3. As long as we get it down in time for Oregon we’re good to go [we won’t need to be even close to where we want to be on defense for the first 3 games]…..

      4. KAM: The Catholic run homeless shelter St. Vincent De Paul’s  has turned into a haven for t r a n s g e n d e r-identifying i l l e g a l a l i e n s , who can receive free room, board and “gender-affirming care” all on the taxpayers’ dime.

        DON: No wonder Cowardly Gabby and the Chicago D e m o c r a t P o p e hate T r u m p so much… they don’t want the Grift to end!

      5. Sane Gabby: The Catholic church is opposed to “gender affirming care” in the strongest terms. Hard to believe that Saint Vincent DePaul would run an organization that provided it.

      6. Archbishop Salvatore Cordileone of San Francisco is a staunch opponent of sex-change surgeries (gender-affirming care), viewing them as a “rejection of the body-soul unity” and a “fundamental threat to the church’s faith”. His position aligns with the Vatican’s 2024 guidance and 2025 USCCB directives, which explicitly ban such interventions in Catholic-affiliated hospitals.

The Bishop needs to shutdown this facility.
