I like to write about Gary Patterson because I know a lot about him through common friends.
Patterson said this week he has incorporated some zone concepts into his defense and favoring man-to-man schemes.
But I hear this is actually not really a departure. He’s always run hybrid defenses that played man defense within a zone.
So far, I hear things about him thatr remind me of Pete Carroll. When Patterson was at TCU, he was ther head coach but also extremely hands-on with the defense, coaching the linebackers and scripting practice for the defense.
This sounds similar to Carroll at USC, who was defensive coordinator and head coach.
The more I hear, the more I wish Patterson were USC’s head coach.
- USC is the favorite to land UConn center Eric Reibe. He is probably commanding at least several million dollars.
- Ryann Bennett, a 5-8 guard from UC Davis, is transferring to USC.
- Wild flowers are blooming at the green space at USC, which used to be the site of the Trojan Hall dorm.

Several million dollars for a guy who averaged 13 minutes a game ?
Didn’t Little Man’s Disease recruit TWO 6’11” kids ?
I wish Curt Cignetti was our coach

I met Carrot once when he arrived in 2005 at Oregon with the team for a walk-through the day before the game with the Ducks, and told him, “Beat Oregon,” when he did only later to lose to Texas seeking a 3-peat

Can a football player be micromanaged? USC has four guys coaching a six player linebacker group – Ekeler, AJ Howard, Ryan and Patterson. You have four guys evaluating what you did on every snap.

Answer to Plow’s question:
Coach #1: “Good job!”
Coach #2: “Bad job!”
Coach #3: “Perfect!”
Coach #4: # “Needs Work!”

Glad to know that Scott is a friend of a friend of Gary Patterson, and that he is viewed by Scott as the second coming of Uncle Pete who we almost all revere. But, why is wishing that he were the head coach. Scott, please be happy that we have another Pete Carroll to run the defense and let LR concentrate on the offense of which he is very good. USC has the best of both worlds, offense and defense. Doesn’t this bode well for next year. As was mentioned yesterday, Coach Patterson knows how to teach the coaching of all aspects of defense which should make the whole team better. Fight on, Dan, Class of 1962

When Patterson was at TCU and Carroll at SC, Patterson made a remark to a reporter that their goal for winning was “To be the USC of Texas schools.”

My theory is that successful SC coaches needs be characters. Not necessarily the same, but charismatic personalities. McKay, JRob, Carrol, even Howard Jones in a different way. Don’t know about Gloomy Gus, but with a name like that, seems like he was a personality. SC is never going to succeed with milquetoasts like Riley, Hackett, Smith and Helton. The great missed opportunity was probably firing Kiffin too soon. He had the personality, but was under sanctions and under seasoned at that point. If only he came to SC after going through Saban’s coach rehab.
Patterson has the personality to succeed at SC.
Gloomy Gus anecdote:
Penn State arrived at the game 45 minutes late and ten minutes after the scheduled kickoff because of a traffic jam. Henderson accused Penn State coach Hugo Bezdek of doing so as a psychological tactic, and the coaches nearly began throwing punches. Later, they exchanged public insults after the game.
Boy, look what at rivalries used to mean at SC:
Henderson left USC following the 1924 season, despite a 45–7 record, partly due to his inability to defeat rival California in five tries.

KAM: USC dumped all their rivalries and tradition in the pursuit of the all-mighty dollar.
DON: Cal used to have songs devoted to the SC rivalry. Now all that is gone.

MG, that would be anyone who’s ever referred to Traditions as “Tradies”.
