I looked again at the USC roster over the weekend and it confirmed some things to me.
Mainly, I see some real question marks at linebacker and in the secondary (cornerback and safety). I’ve mentioned it before but there are some players expected to play who haven’t done much in their careers. Some might exceed what they have done but not everyone.
And I’m not even talking about the true freshmen. I could see four true freshmen starting: Wide receiver Trent Mosley, tight end Mark Bowman, defensive end Luke Wafle, cornerback Elbert Hill. Skill guys can come in and play right away and Wafle seems to be a special player.
But really it’s guys playing in the back seven of the defense that concerns me and I guarantee Gary Patterson is thinking about it.
One thing to remember: The current roster is the roster. There is no adding of transfers in the summer anymore for college football.
Now that’s a good thing for the fans, but it also means you cannot tweak the roster. I know USC made a deliberate decision to focus on its recruiting class (a gigantic 32 players). But I think USC should have added a couple more defensive transfers.
32 players. But none of them can wear 32! 😉

Scott, thanks for your insightful comments, but how did you come to your conclusions if you never attend any practices? What are you basing your assessment on? According to you, USC does not have an all star lineup, but they do have recruits and returning players with potential. We have always had players, but they need to be coached up. We need to trust that Coach Patterson and LR will make them as good as they can be which should be good enough to win at least ten games. Baseball needs relief pitching Fight on, Dan, Class of 1962

Uh, you can’t coach up crap, and SC has had a lot of crap on the OL, DL & LB spot for years.
And why you would think that dunce Riley could coach anything up is laughable.

Budda, LR can coach up QB’s and receivers as demonstrated by the awards his players have earned. Offensive line and RB’s have improved. Now our hope has to be that he finally has a DC who can oach up the defense. Coach Patterson is our hope for coaching up the defense as he did at TCU. Trust but verify was Reagan’s motto during the cold war; so, that should be the motto for USC fans. We can hope for the best, but you have to prove it on the field. This is definitely a hope but verify year. And, as Cignetti proved, you don’t need all five star recruits to have the best team. Fight on, Dan, Class of 1962

Scott doesn’t need to be at practice to know we’ll have freshman in the lineup. On the other hand, we don’t need the best defense in the Big Ten —we just need a defense that gives up ONE less touchdown a game….Patterson can & will deliver on that.

MG, thanks for the healthy dose of realism. Scott needs to learn that perfection is unattainable unless the coach is named Cignetti. Even our national championship football coaches were not perfect every year. That is why we revere years like 1962, 1972 and 2004. Fight on, Can, Class of 1962

This attempt by Ilhan Omar to looking like a victim sounds a lot like someone we all know.
OMAR: His [Shirley’s] efforts are ‘creepy’ harassment, creating a cloud of suspicion unfairly at minorities!
They must all have the same stale playbook.

Unfortunately C h i c k e n s h i t Gabby, there is nothing righteous about you.
Your a gutless, lying punk, that hurls insults on the handicapped, the homeless, or bloggers’ wives, mothers and daughters and then scurries away like a scared little mouse. You belong on the B i d e n/H a r r i s re-election committee. You will find kindred spirits there. Go and leave the Inside USC blog alone.
